As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the upcoming film adaptation of Borderlands. The casting choices, particularly Kevin Hart as Roland, seemed questionable to say the least. However, after hearing Florian Munteanu‘s words of praise for Hart’s dedication and commitment to the role, my curiosity has been piqued.
Making a movie out of a cherished series can be quite a challenging endeavor. Regardless of the strategy chosen, there will always be fans who disagree. This is exactly what’s happening with the upcoming film based on the video game “Borderlands.” Critics have already expressed their dissatisfaction over the movie’s rating, but the most vocal disapproval may stem from fans struggling to envision Kevin Hart as the character Roland, a fan-favorite from the games. Interestingly, it appears that Hart’s co-star shares these doubts, yet assures us that we need to watch it to truly understand the casting choice.
Florian Munteanu appears thrilled beyond belief to portray the emblematic psychopath Krieg in Borderlands. His enthusiasm stems from the fact that Munteanu is an ardent admirer of the games, causing him to initially question the casting of Kevin Hart as Roland. In his own words:
I was thrilled to star alongside Kevin Hart in a movie, yet at the same time, I was well aware of the script and the part he was playing. To be honest, I harbored some reservations due to the contrast between my character, Roland, a stoic and formidable soldier, and Kevin’s more comedic persona. However, that’s what makes acting fascinating, and it’s a testament to Kevin’s and other gifted actors’ abilities to transcend their typical roles. They can transform into completely different characters.
Florian Munteanu is a well-known boxer who has made his mark in Hollywood by portraying large characters like Viktor Drago from the Creed franchise and Razor Fist with sword-wielding skills in Shang-Chi. Since he’s a big man himself, it might seem natural for him to anticipate playing characters of similar stature. However, upon learning that Kevin Hart was cast as his favorite character, Roland, Munteanu expressed admiration for Hart’s dedication. He further mentioned that his initial reservations about the casting were eventually dispelled.
For nearly three months, I had the privilege to train alongside the Navy SEALs – an experience that has undeniably honed my combat skills. Performing all my own stunts is something I take great pride in, as I know firsthand how challenging it can be. Seeing a talented individual like him push his limits and watching him excel only serves to inspire and motivate me further. I firmly believe that he’s going to leave many people astonished with this role.
Kevin Hart was thrilled beyond measure when he learned he had been cast in this role, as his dedication to fitness is well-known. It’s clear that he had no intention of putting in a half-hearted performance. In fact, he passed up the chance to play Santa in last year’s “Dashing Through The Snow,” demonstrating that he doesn’t settle for just any role for financial gain. As one of the early supporters of “Borderlands” during its development and having won over Florian, we’re eager to see if he can captivate a wider audience with his performance!
Despite some people finding the movie’s cast unusual, it’s undeniably impressive – that was Jamie Lee Curtis’ reason for joining, and Jack Black hinted he was “burning up” in his role. With Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Eli Roth as director, and more, it seems they can’t miss! The film hits theaters this Friday, August 9th.
