As a seasoned gamer of both virtual and real-life dramas, I’ve watched my fair share of characters grapple with power dynamics, family ties, and the pressure of living up to expectations. The latest addition to the cast of The Irrational, Simon Wylton, played by Max Lloyd-Jones, is no exception.
In the fall 2024 TV lineup, The Irrational embarked on a fresh chapter when Season 2 debuted, not merely due to Alec finding resolution about the fire from long ago in the Season 1 finale. A significant event also occurred as Phoebe chose to depart the team in that episode (available for streaming with a Peacock subscription). To replace her, Rizwan brought in Simon Wylton, played by Max Lloyd-Jones. In an interview with TopMob, Lloyd-Jones discussed the difficulties facing his character and the delightful aspects of collaborating with Jesse L. Martin.
Max Lloyd-Jones joined “The Irrational” following his work on Star Wars TV series and being cast in Final Destination 6. As a member of the Wylton family connected to Wylton University, there were initial concerns about him replacing Phoebe, which Rizwan had some reservations about. Meanwhile, Alec already knew Simon socially. By the end of Season 2’s several episodes, I wondered how Simon’s relationship with Alec compared to his friendship with Rizwan. I posed this question to the actor himself, and he shared his thoughts:
It appears there’s a unique balance at play since Alec holds a superior position but also enjoys a friendly rapport with Simon, similar to a family connection. Initially, when they greet each other, Alec addresses him by his first name, later recognizing Simon as the professor. This realization prompts Alec to adapt their interaction. Given Alec’s renowned status, it’s understandable that there might be an element of intimidation present.
In order for Simon and Alec to collaborate effectively, given that Alec would be their superior as one of two research assistants in Season 2, a change was necessary. This will evolve further in the upcoming episode of “The Irrational,” with Phoebe rejoining the team, shifting the roles from two RAs to three Research Assistants (RAs). Lloyd-Jones hinted at this by mentioning that Simon was initially brought on board to fill in for Phoebe.
Simon is aware that he needs to step up to the challenge given the significant expectations for his tasks. He aims to make an impact while also ensuring he’s respected, not just seen as getting the job due to his family name or past accomplishments. There’s a unique dynamic between him and Rizwan, more of a peer relationship. However, with Alec, it’s like a master-student interaction.
Alec is of course renowned in the world of behavioral science; actor Jesse L. Martin brings some renown of his own to the lead role of The Irrational. Not only is he among the Law & Order actors to appear in the most episodes of the franchise, but he was a key part of The Flash before cutting back to work on The Irrational.
With his role as an original cast member in Broadway’s “Rent” (which he also reprised for the 2005 film adaptation), Max Lloyd-Jones was a well-recognized figure to lead NBC’s drama series. Before they were co-stars, Max shared what he already knew about Jesse L. Martin.
It’s clear he has a history in Broadway’s Rent, and given the frequent mentions of his name, I was thrilled to collaborate with him. Known for his versatility and talent, he can captivate audiences on stage, television, and film. Fortunately, I had some familiarity with him since I spent a significant part of my life in Vancouver. During that time, he was filming The Flash here for several years, and I knew people who worked alongside him, all of whom spoke highly of his professionalism.
Back in 2014 when The Flash first zoomed onto our screens, Jesse L. Martin was the renowned figure among the cast, way before Grant Gustin became synonymous with the Scarlet Speedster instead of just a Glee guest star. During my time on The Flash set, I’d only heard great things about Martin, and now I can share my own experience working with him: it was nothing short of inspiring.
When interacting with Jesse, there’s always an educational aspect, and he maintains a friendly and laid-back environment on set, which is something that stands out to me the most and I admire the most about him.
Fans have been speculating about the role Simon will play in the team after “The Irrational” took a week break, as the last episode ended with Phoebe’s return. The sneak peek only hinted at Phoebe spending time with Alec, but it seems like this upcoming episode promises an exciting hour of television. Here’s a glimpse:
Don’t forget to catch the next installment of “The Irrational” on NBC this coming Tuesday, November 26th! If you’ve been away from Season 2 or simply want a reminder about how Phoebe finds herself back with Alec’s team and the current state of Rizwan and Simon’s work friendship, you can easily catch up by streaming the series on Peacock.
