I Honestly Didn't Think The Penguin Season 2 Would Happen, But The Batman's Matt Reeves Just Sent My Optimism Soaring

As a seasoned gamer and DC fanatic who’s weathered countless storms of delayed releases and canceled projects, I can confidently say that Matt Reeves’ cryptic interview about “The Penguin” has me on the edge of my seat! The tantalizing hints he dropped about potential future seasons have ignited a spark of hope in this weary heart, a beacon guiding us through the labyrinth of Gotham City.

Thanks mainly to the creative endeavors of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, viewers can anticipate a wealth of upcoming DC TV series, ranging from the horror-comedy blend of Creature Commandos to the mystery-thriller Lanterns. However, beyond this interconnected universe lies Colin Farrell’s character, Oz Cobb, the cunning criminal mastermind in HBO’s critically acclaimed crime drama The Penguin. Fans are eagerly waiting to learn if he will once again wear the prosthetics for Season 2.

To be truthful, I had thought that The Penguin would only be a limited series, acting as an engaging interlude between Matt Reeves’ initial Batman film and the sequel, The Batman: Part II. It could be that my skepticism was influenced by the extended intervals between projects and the numerous Gotham-based projects that were initiated but ultimately abandoned.

Though I’ve never had insider knowledge of Matt Reeves’ long-term plans, he’s generally been careful and strategic when discussing Batman projects beyond James Gunn’s DCU. However, during an interview with Andy Serkis for Interview Magazine, a hint of light emerged in the darkness when discussing The Penguin. When asked about whether they would focus on The Penguin or another aspect within Gotham City, Reeves subtly responded:

Absolutely! Our discussions have been thrilling as more people are getting into our show. It’s a dream come true seeing my vision unfold, and HBO has been fantastic in their support from the start. To witness the show’s acceptance is truly exhilarating. We’ve been brainstorming about creating additional series. I wanted to ensure we avoided the origin tale, a path many other shows have taken. Instead, the prospect of exploring these characters through a unique lens is incredibly intriguing.

It’s still a bit premature to be overly enthusiastic, as the filmmaker hasn’t officially confirmed a Season 2 with a “Season 2 Is Happening” cake. Reeves might have been referring to other projects he has planned, but it seems plausible that he would clarify if there were any differences, considering fans are familiar with the Arkham Asylum series that was canceled this year.

Given this situation, let’s happily assume that “The Penguin” has a good chance of receiving another season, and since the primary cast members are still alive, they can all reappear if the show continues following its finale. However, I must admit I’m not overly hopeful about it, but Oz definitely won’t meet his end, and at that point, everyone else could theoretically be written off the storyline.

Matt Reeves emphasized the significance of delving into hidden corners of Gotham City, allowing viewers to find refuge and engage with various characters rooted in the rich Batman lore. Put simply, he was discussing the importance of exploring these nooks and crannies of Gotham.

As a devoted fan, I find that the tales of Batman resonate deeply with me, delving into the heartaches and flaws of cities like Gotham – mirroring our own world’s struggles. It’s about striving for a brighter future where cities should thrive, yet grappling with their darker realities instead. Each story offers an immersive, almost novelistic journey through urban crime sagas, while still allowing for distinct, standalone narratives. For instance, Oz’s story is uniquely his own, and the approach is to craft other stories in a similar vein – offering self-contained experiences that hold their individual weight.

Regardless of how tenuous it might seem, I plan to firmly grasp the point he made: “Oz’s story equals Oz’s story,” rather than using the past tense of the verb.

Indeed, Colin Farrell has been open about his discomfort while wearing Oz’s prosthetics during filming, raising questions about his willingness to reprise the role for another season. However, it’s also important to note that at the time, he was appreciative of having such a prominent part, and as Reeves suggested, the positive reception the show has been receiving for the last two months must be rewarding. Additionally, with all the early Emmy talk, it certainly adds to the excitement.

The Penguin‘s finale is set to air on HBO on Sunday, November 10 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
