As a devoted fan of Modern Family, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and amusement when recalling the antics of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan. The show was an integral part of my television diet for over a decade, and it remains one of the most memorable sitcoms in recent history.
Just like the most beloved sitcoms ever made, such as the lively and innovative “Modern Family,” eventually have to end. Over a period of more than 10 Seasons, it became a staple in many households, though some might argue that its run was excessive. Despite this, it successfully challenged norms and rightfully earned high praise. The show garnered so much recognition that awards were showered upon it, to the point where Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who portrayed Mitchell Pritchett, recently disclosed an embarrassing moment the entire cast experienced during their Emmy-winning years.
On Busy Philipps’ weekly podcast, I found myself reminiscing about our shows and the accolades we’ve received, such as Emmys. A listener inquired if I ever felt like I was overstepping my boundaries during the shows, and I shared that I genuinely enjoyed the award ceremonies. However, I confessed that the audience’s reactions were sometimes different, expressing their feelings about the intensity of our performances.
Instead of saying “No, but the audience grew tired of our presence,” you could rephrase it as “Unfortunately, the audience seemed to tire of us being around after some time.” And instead of “We won five years in a row, which is some sort of a record,” you might say “For five consecutive years, we managed to secure a win, setting quite an achievement.” Lastly, for “I think we tied with Frasier for the most consecutive Emmy wins in a row,” you could paraphrase as “As far as I can recall, we shared the title of the most continuous Emmy winners with Frasier.” For “and I remember the year we won for the fifth time, there was a collective groan in the audience,” you could say “I clearly remember that in the year we won our fifth Emmy, the audience let out a collective sigh, perhaps anticipating another win.
Over approximately five years, the Emmy Awards run of “Modern Family” stood out as remarkable and dominated the spotlight. Competing alongside a timeless sitcom like “Frasier” wasn’t just a mere feat; it was well-deserved for several of those years.
Towards the end of the program, the pace of the awards began to decelerate. As he reminisced about their first unsuccessful year, Ferguson admitted with some apprehension that an awkward moment occurred between him and his fellow performers. This incident, it seemed, mirrored the Pritchett family’s predicament. They were unsure which door to use when exiting the awards ceremony, as they had always been escorted off stage through a different door in previous years. Therefore, while recounting this story, the actor explained:
The intriguing part is that in our first attempt, we didn’t emerge victorious. When you win, you ascend to the stage and then retreat to backstage for press interviews. So, it wasn’t until our sixth nomination that we found ourselves bewildered – not knowing how to leave the venue. It might sound a bit unpolished, but when we didn’t win in our sixth year, we were confused about the exit. We approached what we thought was the exit door, only to be told, ‘This isn’t the exit, it’s always been over there.’ We replied, ‘We’ve never had to use that door before.’ A group of around 10 actors then guided us, saying, ‘That’s the way we went last year.’
With his jaw dropped open, Philipps expressed that the tale was ‘memorable,’ and indeed, it was. Following such an exhausting race, it’s hardly shocking that the team was unsure about departing, as they had been thrust into the media spotlight for quite a few years prior.
Currently, with a sense of amusement and pride at the show’s triumphant past, I find myself pondering if perhaps Mitchell and his kin could make a comeback. There’s been a lot of buzz about a possible revival hinted at by Ferguson and co., which has left us eagerly anticipating. Some fans even hold on to the idea of a Cam and Mitchell spinoff, although unfortunately, it seems like just a wishful thought for now!
Currently, you’ll need to access the award-winning series through a Hulu+ or Peacock subscription as streaming platforms for now.
