As a dedicated gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of military dramas, I must say that the final season of SEAL Team was a poignant and fitting conclusion to a series that had me hooked since its debut. The emotional rollercoaster it took us on was as thrilling as any game mission, and despite my secret wish for Max Thieriot‘s miraculous return, I understood the reasons behind his absence.
The military drama series “SEAL Team,” airing on Paramount+, concluded its seven-season run on October 6, leaving fans as teary-eyed as ever. The storylines were neatly tied up and sent some of the Bravo team members off in unexpected directions. While the final season was captivating, I secretly wished that Max Thieriot would make a miraculous return, but I can see why it didn’t work out within the context of the show.
For six seasons, Max Thieriot played Clay Spenser, but midway through Season 6, he had to leave due to his involvement in creating and starring in Fire Country. The show SEAL Team eventually wrote off Clay’s character, but I was hoping for a comeback in a later flashback or dream scene during the final episodes. Unfortunately, executive producer Spencer Hudnut clarified to TV Insider that such a scenario was out of the question.
Frankly, the struggle to ensure Max completed Season 6 of his work was immense; I didn’t see any point in even attempting to tackle more issues at that time.
The television series “Fire Country” has seen a surge in popularity since its debut in 2022, and with Thieriot playing a key role and also serving as an executive producer, he found himself in a tricky situation. I can understand why the writer for “SEAL Team” felt this way. On a positive note, it’s satisfying that he managed to conclude Clay’s narrative before officially leaving a few years ago.
Juggling two demanding shows simultaneously can be quite challenging, especially when one of them is expanding into a franchise. With a spinoff featuring Morena Baccarin already in the works and another potential one starring Jared Padalecki, it’s understandable that Hudnut might not feel inclined to pursue Thieriot for the final season.
Despite Thieriot not reappearing following his departure, Clay remained a significant figure throughout the narrative. Bravo was deeply grieving, particularly A.J. Buckley’s character Sonny, who vowed to support his family. Alona Tal, portraying Clay’s wife Stella, continued to make appearances even after Clay’s demise and often provided comfort for both Jason and Sonny, especially during the final season. To summarize this, Hudnut stated:
Clay exists. Clay hangs over the season for sure. I mean, he’s obviously inspiring Sonny [A.J. Buckley] in a lot of ways, and he’s haunting Ray on some levels. And I do think we pay honor to Clay in the finale through Stella [Alona Tal] and through Sonny’s actions. I think even in death, Clay really helped Sonny become the best version of himself. And so, to me, that was enough.
Although Thieriot didn’t reappear on the series, they cleverly found various methods to incorporate his character. Consequently, this was a delightful surprise for me.
Despite his absence in the final season of SEAL Team, fans can still anticipate seeing more of Thieriot, as the third season of Fire Country is set to premiere on Friday, October 18 at 9 p.m. ET as part of the 2024 TV schedule. This CBS firefighter drama brings a lot of excitement with its storyline involving a helicopter crash, the complex relationship between Bode and Gabriela, and the addition of a new ex-con character, making it something to look forward to.
