I Just Found Out How Many Kids Tried Out For The New Harry Potter Series, And I'm Having Trouble Even Imagining It

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours sifting through endless character customization options and audition tapes for various video games, I can only imagine the Herculean task that lies ahead for the casting team of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. With over 32,000 auditions to review for just three roles – Harry, Ron, and Hermione – it’s a veritable mountain of potential young stars vying for the opportunity to don the iconic glasses, the lightning-bolt scarf, or the bushy hair and freckles.

The Harry Potter films achieved an unprecedented level of success in multiple aspects, and none more so than for Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint who rose to fame by spearheading the cast. Given this, it’s hardly surprising that numerous children have tried out for the main roles in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, set to air on Max in a few years. However, the sheer number of auditions is still quite astounding.

Francesca Gardiner, the mastermind behind the upcoming Harry Potter series, shared with Deadline that an astounding 32,000 auditions were submitted for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione individually. This figure is truly mind-boggling, indicating approximately 10,000 tryouts for each character.

How Do You Even Review 32,000 Auditions?

It’s hard for me to imagine how you manage to evaluate 32,000 audition tapes. Just by giving each tape five minutes of your time, it would amount to over 111 days if you were watching them non-stop, day and night without any breaks. Even with rest factored in, the task seems dauntingly long.

After reviewing the video submissions, there will likely be a number of prospective candidates who you’d like to interview face-to-face. Given that you might start with 10,000 applicants for each role, this pool could still be quite substantial. Even if one candidate stands out from the videos, it’s wise to observe their live performance to confirm your decision and ensure we’re on the right path. This process will undoubtedly take some time.

On the bright side, it’s unlikely that we’ll be familiar with the names of the selected actors once they are unveiled. However, given that they were chosen from a vast pool, they can undoubtedly demonstrate their talent and worthiness for the roles they secured.

Some Harry Potter Casting Is Reportedly Already Underway

It seems that it’ll take a few more months yet to select the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione from all the auditions we have. But on the bright side, it appears that the casting for other roles in the upcoming series, slated to start filming next summer, is already in progress.

It seems that two significant roles are being considered for actors, but no deals have been finalized yet.

It’s said that Mark Rylance could be a potential choice for the role of Dumbledore. Previously, the character of Hogwarts Headmaster was portrayed on screen by Richard Harris, and later by Michael Gambon after Harris passed away.

Currently, it’s rumored that Paapa Essiedu has been given the chance to portray Severus Snape, a role previously brought to life by Alan Rickman in the initial movies. If Essiedu accepts this role, it will demonstrate a dedication to promoting diversity, as the films have not always reflected the characters’ ages as depicted in the books. Furthermore, it would signal an intention to create a more accurate adaptation of the characters.

It’s no picnic for those tasked with sorting through 32,000 audition videos to discover the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione. At the moment, it seems they have little else on their plate. However, in due time, they will undoubtedly bring joy to three young actors by offering them these coveted roles.
