As a long-time fan of gymnastics and fashion, I can’t help but be amazed by the extravagance and elegance that the Paris Olympics has served us this year. The leotards worn by Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee during the individual all-around competition are nothing short of breathtaking, shimmering with every twist, turn, and flip they perform.
It’s truly amazing to witness the Paris Olympics and observe gymnasts like Simone Biles and Suni Lee persevere through their previous health challenges while remaining exceptional in their field. Although the competition itself is captivating, it’s hard not to notice the stylish leotards they wear that sparkle with every move – twist, turn, or flip. Designers behind these outfits have shared the inspiration behind the “Luminous Legacy” and “USA Elegance” leotards, and I must say, I’m simply astounded by their value.
At the 2024 Olympic Games, Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee donned $15,000 leotards while receiving their medals in the individual all-around competition, with Biles taking gold and Lee earning bronze. Designer Jeanne Diaz of GK Elite collaborated with Swarovski to embellish the uniforms of Team USA, aiming to make them as victorious as the athletes themselves. Diaz expressed this on Instagram:
The intention behind designing the ‘Luminous Legacy Leotard’ was to seamlessly blend high-end fashion elements with a patriotic theme, thereby enhancing the aesthetics of Team USA in Paris, a global fashion hub. Essentially, our aim was to infuse elegance and style into the uniforms of our team.
She went on to explain how the crystals in the bodysuit that Simone Biles wore during the all-around competition lined the bodice to create the oh-so-fashionable corset look that we’ve been seeing on every Hollywood red carpet. More than 10,000 special crystals shined red or blue, depending on how the light hit them, adding an extra patriotic flair to the pricey leotard. Take a look at her full explanation:

Regarding Suni Lee’s “USA Elegance” leotard, Macy Bell, the custom gymnastics designer from GK, explained in another Instagram video that its design draws inspiration from traditional French fashion, blended with American elements. The leotard features over 5,000 Swarovski crystals arranged to mimic French lace on the upper front and back, while the lower back detailing resembles a corset’s lacing. Check out how it all came together in the video below.

As a gamer putting myself in the shoes of an athlete, I’ve got to admit, I’m not entirely sure if a leotard costing five figures significantly contributed to America’s triumph in Paris. However, let me tell you, feeling confident and looking great while soaring through the air on uneven bars or bounding across the mat on floor exercise can never be underestimated. It got me thinking, I wonder how much Beyoncé’s bedazzled bodysuit was worth when she graced the stage to introduce Team USA.
Simone Biles and Suni Lee earned their all-around medals following a gold win in the team competition with Jordan Chiles, Hezly Rivera, and Jade Carey. This triumph provided Biles an excellent platform to counter MyKayla Skinner’s criticism about her talent. The impact of this victory is amplified when considering she wore a $15,000 Swarovski crystal-adorned outfit during the event, right?
