As someone who had their eyes opened to the magic of world cinema through Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s masterpiece, City of God, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming HBO series, City of God: The Fight Rages On. When I first watched the film in high school, it was like a punch to the gut – raw, gritty, and unapologetically real. It left an indelible mark on me, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting news of a sequel ever since.
Recently, my team and I devoted significant effort to organizing our top 100 films from the 2000s, culminating in the selection of Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s 2002 crime masterpiece, City of God, as the best. This film, which we awarded a perfect five-star rating, significantly impacted my life, serving as my gateway into the world of cinema during high school. Consequently, I was thrilled to learn that HBO is producing a sequel series, set to premiere soon.
Beginning August 25th, individuals who have HBO or Max subscriptions can watch “City of God: The Fight Rages On,” a series that continues the story years after the original film, revealing where Alexandre Rodrigues’ character, Rocket, has been since his last appearance.
Although I feel a bit dismayed that I didn’t connect the dots earlier while revising our 2024 TV schedule, I must admit that my enthusiasm far outweighs any embarrassment, and I can’t help but be eager to explore it.
City Of God: The Fight Rages On Picks Up Two Decades After The 2002 Film
Based on my understanding of the show and the trailer for “City of God: The Fight Ranges On“, we’ll continue the story 20 years after the original film, focusing on Wilson “Rocket” Rodrigues, who has become a professional photographer. His journey takes him back to his familiar surroundings where he captures images of various individuals – from drug dealers to politicians, police officers to protesters. It seems that Rocket’s return home will be filled with intriguing encounters and events.
I Cannot Wait To Go Back To Favela And See What Rocket Has Been Up To
Despite the favela depicted in “City of God” appearing as a horrifying, “Hell on Earth,” I can’t help but feel thrilled about the upcoming sequel series that transports us once more to the dangerous, drug-ridden, and vibrant slums of Cidade de Deus, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro.
In the movie “City of God,” by directors Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, based on Paulo Lins’ novel, the favela was a place teeming with both cultural richness and violence, brimming with life as much as it was with death. This dual nature, mirroring Rocket’s life within its boundaries, made the movie so captivating when it first came out.
Regarding Rocket, I’m eagerly anticipating learning about his life during the 20 years that span between “City of God” and “The Fight Rages On.” Instead of being the hopeful and ambitious teenager struggling to escape the slums who found himself in the midst of a gang conflict, I’m curious to discover how the lessons from his youth and his transformation into an adult have influenced him.
Despite harboring some reservations regarding the series, such as the absence of original cinematographer César Charlone, I’m incredibly excited to discover what wonders the creative team behind “City of God: The Fight Rages On” has prepared for us. If you fancy revisiting “City of God” before the sequel series debuts, you can do so by subscribing to Paramount+ and streaming it at your convenience.
