John Cena, with his physique fitting for an action star, has indeed portrayed such roles multiple times. Yet, what truly stands out about him is his innate sense of humor, which should never be underestimated. On-screen, Cena is hilarious and his comedic skills are backed by a impressive resume. This becomes especially evident when he playfully teases some of his co-stars who seem unaware of the concept of a “guilty pleasure” movie.
The previous year, John Cena appeared in the comedy film titled “Ricky Stanicky“, which sparked various opinions among critics. Despite not having watched the movie myself, if the wit displayed in this recent Twitter exchange between Cena, Zac Efron, and other cast members is any indication of its humor, I’m eager to give it a watch. When asked about their preferred movies that they shouldn’t enjoy (guilty pleasures), Efron and Jermaine Fowler seemed unsure of the term. This confusion prompted Cena to educate them in the funniest way possible.
John Cena understands the sentiment. Zac Efron and his fellow actor appear to believe that enjoying a movie intended for children implies a secret, indulgent enjoyment. However, there is nothing shameful about appreciating a film that is widely regarded as excellent, regardless of whether it’s animated or not. For instance, “Finding Nemo” is often considered one of Pixar’s finest works and boasts a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s simply enjoyable, not something to be kept secret. It’s just enjoyment.
The film is widely regarded as terrible, yet for some inexplicable reason, you find yourself appreciating it. It might be hard for others to understand why, but that’s just how it goes – or, in the case of John Cena, it’s a film that some people might confuse with adult content.
John Cena casually refers to “Behind the Green Door” as his “secret indulgence,” knowing full well that his audience would catch the humor. Being just three months younger than him, and sharing the same hometown with the Mitchell Brothers who directed the film, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing when he made this reference. It was a bittersweet moment when I realized that many of today’s actors are too young to appreciate the joke.
In the same year as “Deep Throat”, “Behind the Green Door” also gained recognition as a notable film within its genre and had a broader theatrical release for an adult movie. Many viewers encountered “Behind the Green Door” in 1972, although it was probably not a topic of conversation back then. However, that’s precisely what gives it an appeal that some might feel guilty about enjoying.
Consider taking some time to reflect on your personal indulgences, and don’t forget to tune into Ricky Stanicky by subscribing to Amazon Prime Video.
