I Know What You Did Last Summer

Fans are eagerly awaiting the legacy sequel of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” for several reasons, one of which is the highly anticipated comeback of Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played heroine Julie James in the initial two movies. Rumors about her return had been circulating for quite some time, but it took a while to confirm the news, causing some concern among fans that she might not reprise her role. However, a deal was eventually made and now, hints of Hewitt’s return are being subtly revealed in a behind-the-scenes photo that cleverly references the 1997 horror film that started it all.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson hinted at Hewitt’s return in an Instagram post showing a set photo from the upcoming sequel of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. The image features mail addressed to Julie James, which has writing similar to the first letter Julie received a year after her and friends were involved in a fatal hit-and-run. Fans familiar with the series will notice this resemblance. Robinson’s caption simply said, “She’s baaaaack!

As a nostalgic movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that Freddie Prinze Jr. is reprising his role as Ray Bronson for the ’90s franchise’s return, having last shared the screen with Jennifer Love Hewitt in 1998’s “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” Interestingly enough, Freddie’s comeback was confirmed before Jennifer’s, and he’s been filming scenes alongside some of the new cast members in Australia. This exciting development was hinted at by his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who also starred in the original movie but met an untimely end. Now that Jennifer has officially joined the project, Freddie has disclosed that he has additional scenes to shoot for the sequel, and some of these will be with Jennifer.

The ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Legacy Sequel Features a Stacked Cast

In the sequel to the “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” we’ll encounter a host of fresh faces who might either escape the wrath of a vengeful new antagonist or unfortunately find themselves among its victims. The ensemble includes Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, Gabbriette, and Billy Campbell. Keep in mind that with such a sizeable group, it wouldn’t be uncommon for some of them not to survive the story.

Details about the sequel have been kept under wraps, but it appears that it will share some similarities with the first movie, where a fateful accident altered the lives of four companions forever. After this tragic event, the group disperses, but when they all start getting ominous warnings a year later, they are reunited as they find themselves pursued by a hook-wielding murderer who wears a fisherman’s raincoat in the coastal town of Southport. The original movie featured Ryan Phillipe, Anne Heche, and Muse Watson.

Under the direction of Jim Gillespie, the initial movie was penned by Kevin Williamson and was adapted from Lois Duncan’s book with the same title. This film emerged during the wave of success following the release of 1996’s Scream, also authored by Williamson. The movie eventually became a massive box office success, generating $126.3 million globally on a production budget of $17 million. For three consecutive weeks, it topped the American box office charts and was subsequently followed by the 1998 sequel titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Thereafter, a standalone sequel, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was released directly on video. A Prime Video series based on the franchise premiered in 2021 but was canceled after just one season.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel hits screens on July 18.
