I Know What You Did Last Summer Follow-Up Adds Leads

As a long-time gamer and movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the latest news surrounding the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot. The announcement that Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline will join Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King in this horror movie reimagining has me intrigued. I’ve been following the careers of these talented actors for some time now, and I can’t wait to see them bring their unique energy and skills to this classic tale.

According to Deadline, Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline are said to star as two main characters in the upcoming 2025 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot. Known for her role in “Riverdale,” Mendes and “Outer Banks'” Cline will join Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King in this horror movie adaptation. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the new installment could be considered a legacy sequel as there are ongoing talks for Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson respectively.

Recently, Pidgeon acted alongside Ashley Judd in the production “Lazareth.” Her busiest on-screen roles, however, were for the television series “The Wilds.” In addition to this, Pidgeon’s television resume includes appearances in “Tell Me Lies,” “The Game,” and “Me.” Hauer-King gained recognition for her work as Laurie in the 2017 miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” and more recently, she played the role of Prince Eric in the live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.” Hauer-King also portrayed Harry Chase on “World on Fire.”

In February 2023, there were reports that Hewitt and Prinze Jr. were in discussions to retake their roles for a new film based on “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997) and its sequel. This announcement followed the cancellation of the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” Prime Video series after just one season. By 2025, the story’s continuation will be released as a new movie, marking 52 years since Lois Duncan penned the initial young adult novel.

Lois Duncan’s 1973 young adult novel “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was turned into a movie in 1997, but the film based on it, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, strays significantly from the book. The novel is a captivating mystery with a suspenseful narrative for young adults. In contrast, the movie is more like a slasher film. Additionally, while all four characters (Julie, Ray, Barry, and Helen) appear in the film, their outcomes differ dramatically from those in the book.

Additionally, the novel’s intriguing aspect of Bud/Collie’s complexity was missing from the 1997 adaptation. Furthermore, the surprising revelation about Ray towards the end of the story didn’t translate well to the movie. Hewitt portrayed Julie, Ray’s love interest in the film, and she shared her thoughts on potentially reprising her role for a follow-up project with Entertainment Tonight. According to Hewitt, returning to the character could hold significant meaning for her.

As someone who has faced numerous challenges and obstacles throughout my life, I can only imagine how exhilarating and humbling it would be if all the pieces fell into place for a significant accomplishment. The mere thought of it leaves me speechless, almost disbelieving. If this happens, I don’t think words could fully express my emotions – I’d feel both extremely overwhelmed by the responsibility and deeply grateful for the opportunities that led me to this point. It’s an enticing prospect, isn’t it? The idea that all our hard work and dedication might finally pay off. And if it does, I believe the journey will be worth every step taken along the way.

In the meantime, Freddie Prinze Jr. played the role of Ray in both the 1997 film and its 1998 sequel. The actor has disclosed that he conversed with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the director of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (2025). According to an interview with ComicBook.com, Prinze Jr. shared this information.

The director shared an intriguing concept with me during our meeting after Love (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and I were announced for the project, but it’s uncertain if I’ll be involved.

Prinze Jr. continued:

I understand that this person is being very open and transparent about their current situation in Hollywood. They have reached a point in their 47-year-old life where they no longer want to play games or keep secrets. Instead, they choose to put all their cards on the table and communicate honestly. Their experience and maturity have taught them that time is precious, and they don’t have the luxury to waste it on unnecessary secrecy or games in the industry. Furthermore, they may have seen the consequences of such behavior among men in their family, who didn’t live long enough to enjoy the fruits of their labor fully. Therefore, they prioritize authenticity and transparency above all else.

I Know What You Did Last Summer
opens in theaters on July 18, 2025.
