As a dedicated fan and admirer of Michaela Coel’s exceptional storytelling and acting prowess, I can confidently say that I am beyond thrilled about her upcoming project, “First Day on Earth.” With her unique ability to weave personal experiences into captivating narratives, I have no doubt that this new series will resonate with viewers worldwide.
Award-winning actress Michaela Coel is joining forces with HBO and the BBC once more for her forthcoming project titled “First Day on Earth.” In this drama, Coel will both write and act, continuing her successful run from the critically lauded series “I May Destroy You,” which earned an Emmy for Outstanding Writing. “First Day on Earth” centers around Coel’s character Henri, a British novelist who embarks on a journey to Ghana in an attempt to reconnect with her long-lost father by collaborating on a movie there.
Here’s the full synopsis for First Day on Earth (via Variety):
British author Henri Coel finds herself at a crossroads: work is scarce, and her relationship seems stagnant. An opportunity to film in Ghana, West Africa – the homeland of her parents, where her absent father resides – presents itself. Eager to reconnect with her roots, she accepts, but the reality diverges greatly from expectations. The job isn’t as promised, and her father remains elusive, leading Henri into encounters with peril and hypocrisy. She forms new connections, discards her preconceived notions, forges a fresh identity – one that could fortify her spirit, but risks shattering her entirely.
On the first day of its premiere, “First Day on Earth” is presented by A24, an entertainment company co-founded by Jesse Armstrong, best known for his role in “Succession,” and also responsible for producing “I May Destroy You.” Additionally, Sam Bain, Phil Clarke (former Channel 4 commissioners), and Roberto Troni are involved in the production. In a statement, Michaela Coel revealed:
“I’m thrilled to collaborate once more with VAL, HBO, BBC, and A24. Their shared discernment, attention, and skill make me confident that our show is in capable hands. First Day On Earth, a deeply personal tale for me, I hope will captivate viewers globally. I eagerly anticipate audiences joining Henri on her journey.”
We’re Excited for a New Michaela Coel Series
Michaela Coel has been a rising talent ever since she wrote, produced, and starred in E4’s comedy series, “Chewing Gum.” This side-splitting show boasts exceptional Rotten Tomatoes scores for both its seasons and garnered Coel critical acclaim for her outstanding portrayal of Tracy Gordon (a role that earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance). In addition to Coel’s captivating performance, the writing on “Chewing Gum” was also highly praised. The series was inspired by Coel’s personal upbringing and drew heavily from her experiences of being raised by a deeply religious mother. Initially, the show was conceived as a play before it evolved into a sitcom.
In her upcoming personal endeavor, “I May Destroy You” from 2020, the protagonist, Arabella (played by Coel), reevaluates her life following a sexual assault incident. Inspired by a personal event in her own life, Coel penned and starred in this British black comedy-drama. The series garnered widespread critical praise and numerous awards, including five BAFTAs, two Emmys, and a Peabody Award. Coel became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series for her work on the 12-episode series. Given Coel’s talent for turning personal experiences into powerful television shows, we eagerly anticipate that “First Day on Earth” will follow suit.

In addition to reappearing on BBC and HBO for “First Day on Earth”, Coel will take on a leading role in the A24 production titled “Mother Mary”. This film is penned and directed by David Lowery, known for “The Green Knight”. The plot revolves around the intricate relationship between a character played by Anne Hathaway, who’s a musician, and Coel, portraying a renowned fashion designer. Alongside them, Hunter Schafer and Alba Baptista will also feature in this production.
I’m thrilled to share that I’m currently being recognized with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, all thanks to my role in the captivating series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. It’s truly an honor!
