'I Owe That To Him': Tom Holland Shares How Robert Downey Jr. Advocated For Him During Spider-Man Debut In Civil War

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and admiration when I reflect on the journey of Tom Holland as Spider-Man. The way Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man himself, championed him during his first MCU project is truly heartwarming. It’s not every day you see a seasoned veteran like RDJ using his influence to ensure that a newcomer gets the chance to shine.

In a short span of time, Tom Holland has risen to be one of the top young actors with box office appeal. People who have followed Marvel films for years now recognize him as a familiar face, having gained widespread popularity after his introduction as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, a film available on Disney+. More recently, Holland has revealed that Robert Downey Jr. supported him during his initial Marvel Cinematic Universe project.

Fans are excited to find out when Tom Holland will reappear as Peter Parker in a future Marvel film, but the 28-year-old actor is also reflecting on the journey’s start. On the Rich Roll podcast, Holland shared stories about his relationship with RDJ, which started during his audition. In his own words:

I owe a heartfelt thanks to Downey, as I recall sharing this tale earlier. During my audition, surprisingly, it consisted of eight whole pages of dialogue – quite an unusual length for an audition, which usually only includes two pages. The scene featuring Downey was fantastic, and the audition turned out exceptionally well.

The on-screen dynamic between Holland and Downey was exceptional throughout their collaborations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, evident in movies like “Civil War,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” It appears that this strong rapport started during auditions, as Holland mentioned that Downey, an Academy Award winner, encouraged him to experiment with improvisation.

However, it was during the filming of “Captain America: Civil War” that Robert Downey Jr. stood up for Tom Holland. Later, in the same podcast interview, Holland recounted how Downey Jr. assisted him in securing a more significant part in the blockbuster movie, using his own words.

Upon arriving at set following my successful audition, I encountered Marissa Tomei for the first time and commenced working with The Russos, alongside Downey. My original scene, which was extensive during the audition, had been drastically reduced to a page and a half, or possibly even two pages. As we began filming, Downey inquired, “Where did all the kid’s lines go?” The Russos responded, “Given that the script is already 140 pages long, we can’t spend too much time on this.” However, Downey insisted, “You’ll want to invest some time in this. Let’s film the entire scene as it was during the audition. You can always trim it later, but it would be beneficial to have it.

Man, Robert Downey Jr. is something else! Even with his own responsibilities as Tony Stark in “Captain America: Civil War”, he took time to ensure Tom Holland’s debut in the MCU as Spider-Man was smooth. After going through a lengthy audition process, he genuinely believed that the kid deserved to film the entire scene… though unfortunately, the Russo Brothers ended up cutting it out in post-production.

Ultimately, it transpired that Robert Downey Jr.’s stance proved correct, as The Russo Brothers retained the expanded rendition of Peter Parker’s initial appearance, just as he had mentioned.

They used all of it. So I owe that to him. And I think that’s really cool.

Previously, there has been much anticipation among fans about Tom Holland reappearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the ending of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. On a podcast, he recently confirmed that he’s seen a script for “Spider-Man 4”, which is exciting news. Here’s hoping we get more details on this soon!

On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film is titled “Captain America: Brave New World.” In the meantime, take a look at the scheduled release dates for movies in 2025.
