‘I Really Enjoy It Better’: Frank Grillo Explains Why He Likes The DCU Over The MCU (And I Get It)

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Frank Grillo‘s sentiments about the DC Universe resonate deeply with me. Having witnessed the meteoric rise of Marvel Studios and its colossal impact on pop culture, it’s refreshing to see an actor like Grillo find joy in being part of something at its inception.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a behemoth force in the entertainment world, one that plenty of actors have gotten in on through the years. Frank Grillo played Crossbones in a few notable projects (which are streaming with a Disney+ subscription), but he’s also one of the actors who have worked with both Marvel and DC. And the 59 year-old actor recently explained why he likes the DCU more… and I totally get it.

Fans who have followed the Marvel films sequentially over many years have witnessed Grillo portraying his sinister character. However, now he’s shifted to the DC universe, lending his voice to a character in the renewed “Creature Commandos”, which can be streamed with a Max subscription. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his role as Rick Flag Sr., he shared why he’s so excited to be part of the beginnings of the DCU. In his own words:

Marvel is exceptional in its own way, but what truly captivates me about James’s and Peter’s DC universe is its intimacy. It feels more confined, which makes it incredibly personal and engaging for me. I find immense joy in being a part of something at its early stages, witnessing its growth, and observing it blossom.

It seems more appealing to join at the ground level with him, as Grillo entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) when it was already established, but he’s part of the initial DC Universe (DCU). In contrast, Creature Commandos is the inaugural title for Gods and Monsters, which is the name given to the first group of projects. Thus, the first season might mark the beginning of an extended exploration of the superhero genre, a journey he’s already invested in from the outset.

Grillo debuted in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, being seemingly killed off in Civil War. But that didn’t stop him from continuing to play the role through a role in Endgame‘s Time Heist as well as the animated series What If…?. He’s once again performing to a microphone for Creature Commandos, and is one of the show’s main characters rather than a tertiary presence. That’s likely another reason why he’s preferring his time in DC.

In this animated series, we follow a new team of DC convicts who are compelled to carry out orders given by Amanda Waller. However, due to restrictions on using Task Force X with humans, she is now utilizing a collection of supernatural beings and monstrous entities instead.

Just like Joel Kinnaman portrays his character, Rick Flag Sr. serves as Waller’s eyes in the field, aiming to assemble the Creature Commandos. The storyline may not delve too deeply, but a second season has already been planned. Moreover, many fans are eager to witness Grillo bring Flag to life in live-action.

Currently, you can stream “Creature Commandos” on Max, while the DC Universe makes its big-screen debut with Superman on July 11th. In the meantime, here are some upcoming movie release dates for 2025.
