I Saw Robert Downey Jr. Return To Marvel In Hall H, Here's Why I'm Worried About Him Playing Doctor Doom

As a seasoned gamer and longtime Marvel fan, I must admit that the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU at this year’s Hall H panel had me both thrilled and perplexed. The energy in the room was electric as the Russos took the stage, and when RDJ made his grand entrance, it felt like a blast from the past.

For first-timers, Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con is the main attraction. It offers fans exclusive footage they won’t find elsewhere and brings out A-list stars without holding back on the budget. The event always includes surprises, and this year was no exception as Disney-owned Marvel made a significant announcement – Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As someone who was in Hall H when it was announced, I can confirm that the audience’s response was deafeningly loud. Hell, I was hyped too, because who expected that to happen? However, I filed out of the hall and made my way back to TopMob’s studio at the Hilton Bayfront, I began to sour on the idea. Now I have some major concerns about his inclusion in upcoming Marvel movies I need to write about.

Hall H Was Flipping Out, But I Was Just Confused

As a hardcore gamer, let me say that Marvel had us all on the edge of our seats, anticipating their big reveal. Though it wasn’t much of a surprise, the official word that the Russo brothers would direct the next two Avengers movies sent a wave of excitement through the crowd, making us erupt in cheers!

Initially, the Russos made an ambitious move by declaring their intention to shift focus from Kang The Conqueror and instead work on a refreshed version of the beloved tale “Secret Wars”. When they also disclosed that Dr. Doom would be introduced in the MCU, Hall H erupted with excitement, making it even more exhilarating when they revealed the actor chosen to play him. With Robert Downey Jr.’s mask removed and his appearance on stage, it’s no wonder fans went wild! After all, who could have predicted such an event? Admittedly, I was taken aback as well, but my feelings grew more complex and perplexed the longer I contemplated it.

Bringing Back RDJ Feels Like Marvel Lacks Confidence In Its Current Stars

Endgame,” and it seemed like they were passing the mantle to a fresh group of superheroes. However, we haven’t seen these new characters fully step into their roles yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), making it seem like the studio rushed to bring back an established actor to strengthen the franchise once more.

I didn’t believe it was necessary to have Robert Downey Jr. return to revitalize Marvel movie interest, given that I’m not privy to their marketing and research strategies. However, it seems plausible that developing a robust new group of Avengers, leveraging existing heavyweights, could achieve the same effect.

Robert Downey Jr. Feels A Little Old To Play Doctor Doom

In light of his impressive Oscar victory for the film “Oppenheimer,” it’s clear that Robert Downey Jr. possesses a broad acting talent. I firmly believe he has the potential to deliver an outstanding performance, one that audiences will embrace. However, when considering him for the role of Doctor Doom, there’s a question mark. He might not be the first choice that comes to mind, despite the existence of a character variation that shares similarities with Tony Stark.

To avoid suggesting a certain age group, but considering the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is ten years older than Pedro Pascal who portrays Reed Richards, Doctor Doom’s main adversary in the MCU, it seems unusual if they were meant to be around the same age. Given the flexibility of the MCU regarding comic book canon, I can’t help but wonder how Marvel plans to depict their relationship, as it might cause some inconsistency for fans if they are portrayed as being close in age. After all, looking at these two gentlemen, it’s hard to believe they’re of the same generation. This potential discrepancy could prove challenging for viewers if Marvel decides to maintain this timeline in their storytelling.

There’s So Many Actors Out There That Could’ve Been Tapped

Over the years, numerous actors have sparked fan discussions about who might portray Dr. Doom. Many of these suggestions were outstanding picks, and I’ve always found Bryan Cranston as a potential ruler of Latveria appealing. However, there are still many talented Hollywood stars waiting to make their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, any one of whom could excel in the role.

Instead of watching someone new play the role, we have Robert Downey Jr. portraying a character other than his famous one. Frankly, another actor could’ve delivered that performance just as well. I’m crossing my fingers that RDJ intends to give an outstanding performance in this role, and there’s a clear strategy behind it. Otherwise, it seems like they are merely casting him to attract audiences who may have stopped going to the movies after the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame.

This Feels Like Marvel Hitting The Panic Button

The comeback of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe along with the Russos resuming directing roles stirs up feelings as if Marvel is rushing things. We had earlier indications that the studio would move away from Kang following Jonathan Majors’ dismissal due to legal matters, but the sudden change of direction towards Doom seems like an abrupt departure from everything that was being developed in this new phase.

As someone who has followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for over a decade now, I must say that bringing Robert Downey Jr. back to play Doctor Doom feels like a short-term solution that might not stick. While I understand the nostalgia and excitement surrounding his return, I fear it could become stale rather quickly.

The outcome of resurrecting Robert Downey Jr.’s character remains uncertain for now. In the meantime, we eagerly anticipate further announcements about “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Here’s hoping that Marvel has devised a strategy to revitalize their expansive cinematic universe.
