I Saw Twisters In 4DX, And I'm Now Mad I've Missed So Many Other Blockbusters In This Form

As a movie enthusiast who’s been in the industry for over two decades, I’ve seen my fair share of cinematic experiences. But nothing quite compares to the exhilarating ride that is 4DX. Having recently discovered this premium format with the release of “Twisters,” I’m now kicking myself for missing out on some true gems in the past.

Based on the strong opening box office of the 2024 movie “Twisters,” it seems that a large number of moviegoers have been eagerly anticipating and flocking to this film. In other words, “Twisters” has generated significant interest among audiences.

An extra premium option has caught my attention lately due to all the positive buzz surrounding its impact on director Lee Isaac Chung’s successful movie. After experiencing my first major event film in 4DX, I can’t help but regret having missed out on so many other opportunities to try it out.

What Is 4DX?

A 4DX experience is just as its name suggests: a four-dimensional cinematic adventure! Imagine it as a more toned-down simulation of a thrilling theme park ride. As action scenes unfold on screen, your seat synchronizes and even vibrates in response. Moreover, environmental effects such as rain, snow, and wind are introduced into the theater to heighten the immersive experience.

I’ve seen my fair share of movies in my time, but none quite like “Twister.” The way the story unfolds, with the intense weather and the daring storm chasers, really drew me in. And let me tell you, watching it with my wife as the wind howled outside our living room window only added to the experience.

4DX Turns Twisters Into A Literal Thrill Ride

If you’ve read my take on “Twisters,” I expressed fondness for the ’90s blockbuster excitement that Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones brought to this ensemble adventure. However, after seeing other critics praise the experience of attending 4DX press previews, I must admit mine was in standard 2D format without any added premium effects.

In all honesty, I’m somewhat pleased that events unfolded this way since 4DX makes Twister an exhilarating rollercoaster experience. Consequently, jotting down typical notes would have been impossible due to my challenging handwriting even when stationary, let alone in the dark.

I’m genuinely shocked that seatbelts weren’t available, as the ride got bumpy at times, particularly during the parts depicting raw natural forces and large trucks trying to outrun each other to reach the next tornado first.

If You’ve Already Seen Twisters, It’s Well Worth Seeing Again For The Experience Alone

In a 4DX showing of “Twisters,” you’re not just watching the movie, you’re living it. The seats move to match the action on screen, but that’s not all. You also feel the weather conditions as they happen. The wind picks up when Daisy Edgar-Jones’ character Kate observes the right conditions for a new storm. It rains heavily during the emotional opening scene where she experiences great loss. Even small sounds, like a car horn honking or a door slamming, create a vibration in your seat to fully immerse you in the experience.

If only the seats moved during a movie, I’d suggest 4DX as an exciting premium cinema experience. But with the advanced audience interaction features, similar to what you’d find in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” even those hesitant about the film’s appeal could enjoy it more.

Previous Blockbuster Movies I’m Mad I Missed In 4DX

I had heard of the 4DX format before but wasn’t convinced it was worth my attention. Previously, there hadn’t been much effort to bring film critics to these screenings, and audience reactions weren’t very noticeable. However, after watching “Twisters” in this immersive format, I began investigating movies I had missed seeing in this way, and now I regret not experiencing them earlier.

In simpler terms, the movies that stand out to me are “No Time To Die” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.” The latter features an epic MonsterVerse battle reminiscent of a theme park experience. It’s disappointing not to be a part of thrilling scenes like racing in an Aston Martin or dodging SPECTRE assassins in a Cuban bar, as it doesn’t align well with my public image.

Instead of the regular options, I’d jump at the opportunity to watch “Lightyear,” “Fast X,” and “Civil War” in 4DX with added atmospheric effects and synchronized seat motion if given a second chance. By the way, there are some truly impressive films coming up for 4DX following “Twister’s” short tenure.

Upcoming Movies I’ll Definitely Be Watching In 4DX

It’s likely that “Twisters” will give up most of its premium movie experience to Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool and Wolverine” this weekend. However, the 4DX schedule still offers various chances to feel excitement, fear, or even tears in the future. If my hunch is right about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s superhero duo, it could elicit all three emotions simultaneously.

Moving forward, I’m eagerly anticipating both “The Wild Robot” and “Transformers One,” as their trailers have already touched my emotions. The former may offer a profound 4DX experience, while the latter is reportedly in an advanced format, making me ponder whether or not to embrace the 3D technology for each film.

If I were just planning one more 4DX experience this summer, it would likely be “Alien: Romulus.” I’m currently considering purchasing one of the collectible popcorn buckets for “Alien” being sold at theaters. Despite my hesitation, I’m open to experiencing the sensation of being pursued by Facehuggers in this innovative format.

Twisters revolutionizes the film experience, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of ’90s blockbusters while making 4DX an engaging cinematic option. The only suggestion I have is that the scent of brisket and barbecue not present when Glen Powell appears on screen is somewhat underwhelming.

Instead of that, get ready to have a great time with this throwback movie, which could be playing at a cinema close to you. However, I must advise you to act fast if you want to catch it in person. Starting from this weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine are planning to grab the spotlight, and there’s not much time left before they do.
