As a Harry Potter fan who grew up watching the magical series unfold, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of loss with the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. The woman who brought Professor McGonagall to life was more than just an actress – she was a beacon of talent and wit that lit up every scene she graced.
This week, Dame Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89. A highly esteemed actress, she was recognized for her legendary stage performances as well as her roles in the Harry Potter films as Professor McGonagall and in Downton Abbey as Violet Crawley. Following her demise, several of her former colleagues have reminisced about Smith, including her co-stars from Downton Abbey, where she was a constant presence throughout the show’s duration. Now, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Tom Felton are honoring the late Smith.
The Harry Potter movies were well cast. Child actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were at the forefront, but acclaimed British actors like Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman and of course, Maggie Smith were supporting players. The younger stars may not have realized they were working with such titanic talents at the time but later learned to appreciate the experience. Watson noted this in her tribute to Smith. The Hermione Granger actress shared a wholesome BTS photo of the two of them on her Instagram story and said:
In my younger years, I was oblivious to Maggie’s legendary status – the remarkable woman who graced my presence. It wasn’t until I grew older that I truly understood I had acted alongside a paragon of greatness. She was genuine, witty, honest, and self-respecting. Maggie, amidst many male counterparts, you stood tall and firm. Thank you for your kindness. I will miss you dearly.
Rupert Grint, the actor who portrayed Ron Weasley, likewise honored the late icon, reminiscing about her powerful and humorous demeanor on set, as well as her exceptional skill. He also posted a picture of them from a significant scene in Goblet of Fire, where Maggie Smith’s character, McGonagall, taught Ron to dance. As the actor who portrayed Draco Malfoy in the magical world of Potter, some may think my bond with my fellow cast members was strained. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. From the get-go, a remarkable individual, the late star of Sister Act, took us under her wing and nurtured us throughout our journey. One of my earliest scenes with my unforgettable co-star serves as a poignant memory I’ve chosen to share in my tribute on Instagram. Take a look at this snapshot from The Sorcerer’s Stone that stirs up nostalgia.
