At present, the horror genre is experiencing a flourishing period, with its current resurgence captivating fans such as myself. Notably, some of the top-tier horror films are coming back for new installments, among them the upcoming horror release “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Despite Brandy not appearing to reprise her role as Julie’s roommate Karla, the multi-talented artist candidly discussed the challenges she faced while filming the original 1998 sequel.
Brandy has been quite occupied recently due to her flourishing acting roles, particularly in shows such as “Descendants: The Rise of Red“, which can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription. However, she won’t be appearing in the upcoming slasher film “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer“. During an interview with Monica for ET, the singer behind “Have You Ever?” shared candidly about her experience filming that ’90s slasher movie. In her own words:
I hadn’t had a chance to watch I Know What You Did Last Summer due to the bad weather and other circumstances; it turned out to be quite exhausting.
The film “I Still Know” was shot in Mexico instead of the Bahamas for its visual representation. This decision led to a lot of outdoor footage and scenes under heavy rainfall. Despite the stunning outcome, it seems that shooting under such weather conditions wasn’t particularly comfortable.
It appears that Brandy discussed a potential return for the next “IKWYDLS” film, but it seems those negotiations didn’t result in an agreement. Given that the movie was filmed in both Australia and Los Angeles, I can only imagine it would have been quite comfortable to shoot the sequel there. In her chat with Monica, Brandy shared insights into what it was like during the ’90s.
We were outdoors, surrounded by insects and various things. I thought to myself, ‘Perhaps we could have shot this scene elsewhere.’
Is it unfair to criticize her? Despite the fact that “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” seemed genuine, the cast and crew endured harsh weather and insects during filming. Given that the “Sittin’ Up in My Room” singer was still relatively green when it came to movie sets at that time.
In the final scenes of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Karla managed to survive The Fisherman’s brutal assault. This is why many fans, including myself, were eagerly anticipating Brandy returning to the role. However, the singer-actress disclosed that her character’s survival was a contractual agreement at the time, explaining:
As a die-hard movie buff, let me share a behind-the-scenes truth: In the world of horror cinema, characters of color often have a short lifespan. When drafting our film’s contract, I felt it necessary to address this unfortunate reality head-on, ensuring we could create a narrative that defied these stereotypes.
The history of Black characters in horror films often follows a pattern where actors of color meet a gruesome end. Aware of this trope, Brandy took great care to ensure that Karla made it through her harrowing ordeal. Unfortunately, Tyrell (portrayed by Mekhi Pfifer) didn’t share the same fate.
The upcoming remake of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is scheduled for a theater release on July 18th, 2025, as part of that year’s movie lineup. Fingers crossed that the film performs well so we can see Brandy reprise her role in future sequels!
