As a dedicated fan of CBS’ FBI, I found myself eagerly anticipating the start of Season 7, especially after the show’s renewal for another three seasons. However, the news of Katherine Renee Kane‘s departure as Agent Tiffany Wallace was bittersweet, to say the least. As we look towards the 2025 TV schedule, I still miss her presence on the team.
The most memorable moment in Tiff’s final case with the team was undoubtedly Scola getting stabbed and needing a tourniquet from his partner, an event that marked their last interaction. Their goodbye scene, however, was less dramatic but no less impactful, taking place at the end of Season 7 premiere. Maggie wanted to grab a drink with Tiff before she moved to Georgia to be with her family, and asked her what had prompted her decision to leave the Bureau. Tiff explained that she needed closure after Hakim’s departure at the end of Season 6 and was moving to Georgia to be with her sister.
Missy Peregrym’s push for a goodbye scene allowed for an emotional moment on what is typically a procedural show, and gave some context to Tiff’s reasoning for leaving her job. Maggie and Tiff had been through so much together, and their bond was one of the strongest on the team. The Season 7 premiere was Mike Weiss’ first as a showrunner, and he wrote an emotional scene that perfectly captured the weariness and toughness of the characters.
Tiff didn’t ride off into the sunset for a happily-ever-after after everything she had been through, which Katherine Renee Kane reflected in her performance. Her final on-screen goodbye with Maggie was bittersweet at best. I’m glad that FBI didn’t write Tiff out by killing her off or any other way that there’d be no coming back from, and it’d be nice to see her again someday.
Scola’s attempts to find a new partner haven’t been going well, which makes me miss Tiff even more. Lisette Olivera had been cast as a new series regular to work opposite John Boyd, but her exit was announced before she even debuted. For now, we can only wait and see if Scola does get a new partner before the end of the season.
FBI is currently on winter hiatus but will return to CBS on Monday, January 27 at 8 p.m. ET. As usual, new episodes will be followed by FBI: International at 9 p.m. ET and FBI: Most Wanted at 10 p.m. ET. If you want to revisit the fall finales ahead of the winter premieres in late January, you can find those episodes streaming via Paramount+.
On a lighter note, I’ve started a petition for Tiff to return as a guest star during sweeps week. You can sign it by sending a bottle of Georgia peach tea to the FBI writers room. #BringBackTiff!
Supporters of CBS’ FBI series had plenty to anticipate at the beginning of the fall 2024 TV lineup, with the popular drama already secured for another three seasons. However, there was one departure that would mark the start of Season 7 – the departure of Katherine Renee Kane as Agent Tiffany Wallace, which had been revealed during the summer break. As we move towards the 2025 TV schedule, I can’t help but feel the absence of Tiff in the team and ponder over the showrunner’s account of Missy Peregrym and Kane’s unexpectedly emotional farewell scene as Maggie and Tiff.
The most dramatic point in Tiff’s last case together with the team centered around Scola being stabbed in the leg and his partner applying a tourniquet in their final interaction, which John Boyd referred to as “the obvious choice.” Contrastingly, her farewell with Maggie was significantly less violent, taking place at the end of Season 7’s premiere. Maggie desired to have a drink with Tiff before the latter departed for Georgia to be with her family, inquiring about the reason behind her decision to leave the Bureau permanently. Tiff revealed that she sought closure following Hakim’s fate at the end of Season 6 and was planning to relocate to Georgia to stay with her sister. At first glance, their conversation might not appear particularly emotional, but actresses Katherine Renee Kane and Missy Peregrym skillfully portrayed the emotion behind it.
As a supporter of character Kane, portrayed by Tiff, I inquired from the original showrunner Mike Weiss last fall regarding the reason for the premiere’s emphasis on the emotional farewell between Maggie and Tiff. In response, Weiss shared that the FBI team felt it was essential to provide a “proper goodbye” to both Tiff and Kane.
I believe that scene between Tiff and Scola saying goodbye was always going to be significant, like saving each other’s life on an escalator at a train station. It made perfect sense. Interestingly enough, Missy, who portrays Maggie Bell, suggested the idea of a farewell scene after reading the initial script, as she has such admiration for Katherine as an actress. Essentially, she asked if it was feasible to include a goodbye scene for them both, provided that it made sense within the storyline. I found this request endearing and wrote a touching scene for the two characters, which turned out beautifully on screen.
Maggie’s deepest connection might be with OA and Tiff’s was once with Scola, yet both team members had endured trials and tribulations together. Missy Peregrym’s determination to include a farewell scene added an emotional touch to the otherwise routine show, while also providing insight into why Tiff chose to depart from her job.
As a die-hard film buff, I must say that the Season 7 premiere of FBI marked the debut of Mike Weiss as the showrunner, and interestingly enough, he was the one who wrote the episode. During our interview, when I pointed out how emotionally impactful Peregrym’s performance was in a specific scene, Weiss acknowledged it by saying:
As a viewer, it quickly becomes apparent that the show doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to challenging both the characters and the actors portraying them. The writing is raw, gritty, and authentic, avoiding overly sweet or sentimental moments. Instead, it presents a world-weary, tough atmosphere that resonates deeply. Interestingly, despite our affection for these characters, the creators resist the initial urge to make their lives easy, opting instead for a more realistic, lived-in portrayal. This approach makes the show feel all the more genuine and engaging.
Instead of galloping off into the sunset for a perfect ending following all she had experienced, Katherine Renee Kane beautifully conveyed this in her portrayal of Tiff’s character as she bid farewell on screen, embarking on a fresh start in Georgia. Her parting moments with Maggie were at best tinged with bittersweet feelings. Overall, I was pleased that the show FBI didn’t erase Tiff by having her meet an untimely end, and it would be wonderful to see her return some day.
Indeed, Scola’s search for a new companion hasn’t been smooth sailing so far, which unfortunately makes me long for Tiff even more. In the meantime, it seems we’re left in suspense as to whether Lisette Olivera, cast as a regular in National Treasure: Edge of History, will be replaced by John Boyd’s new partner before the season concludes. For now, all we can do is stay tuned and hope for the best.
At present, FBI is taking a break during winter, but it will resume on CBS every Monday starting from January 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). As customary, subsequent episodes will be followed by FBI: International at 9 p.m. ET and FBI: Most Wanted at 10 p.m. ET. If you wish to catch up on the fall finales before the winter premieres in late January, you can stream those episodes on Paramount+.
