As a gamer who has spent countless hours binging sitcoms, I can confidently say that Modern Family is one of those rare shows that truly stands out from the crowd. The impeccable storytelling, relatable characters, and unparalleled cast make it an all-time great in the world of ensemble comedies.
Throughout the chronicles of network television, certain shows have revolutionized our perspective on sitcoms, and when discussing exceptional ensemble comedies, “Modern Family” undeniably stands at the pinnacle. Its position among the greatest sitcoms ever produced is largely due to its captivating narrative and stellar cast. Notably, Julie Bowen, who brilliantly portrayed Claire Dunphy, has shared insights about her audition process for joining the show, and surprisingly, she came close to passing up the opportunity.
Adam Sandler’s co-star from Happy Gilmore appeared as a guest on Andy Richter’s podcast, The Three Questions. They discussed Modern Family, the upcoming Sandler sequel, and Bowen’s new series Hysteria, set to premiere on Peacock in 2024, along with other topics. During the episode, Richter and Bowen reminisced about their early careers and the beginnings of ABC’s hit show. The actress who starred in Totally Killer shared that she was pregnant during that period and auditioning for another show with a higher chance of success. She mentioned the time frame as follows:
I didn’t fully understand Modern Family due to my pregnancy-induced confusion. Meanwhile, I was auditioning for two shows simultaneously, which is often necessary. To clarify my primary role, I had to declare my initial pick. I was trying out for two shows, and I desired the part in Modern Family, but on the other show, the character was pregnant. So, I prioritized the one without the pregnancy.
Just like Bowen, I too had my moments of uncertainty about my career during pregnancy. However, fortunately for me, the show expressed interest in having me on board. In fact, one of the show’s creators personally reached out to me with a potential job offer – a moment that filled me with joy and validation.
One time, Steve Levitan, the creator of Modern Family, exclaimed in disbelief, “Are you insane!?” I responded by saying, “I’ll never get Modern Family if you keep calling me with this big, noticeable belly.” I expressed my desire to take on that role, stating, “I really need this job.” I explained that it was a job that would provide for me and offer stability. However, I added that if I were given the main role initially, I might miss out on other opportunities. Eventually, he said, “Put us in first position,” but they wouldn’t let me switch it back. Looking back, I still get nervous thinking about how close I came to the opportunity, but everything eventually worked out.
It did more than just work out, the sitcom was a massive hit!
The Dunphy family, along with others, graced our screens for an impressive 11 seasons, and there was a solid explanation behind this longevity. From their hilarious and relatable storylines, deep character connections, and the outstanding camaraderie among the cast, the show quickly became a massive success. Even though it ended less than five years ago and everyone has matured and evolved during its run, saying goodbye was tough.
It’s doubtful that the humor in the show would be as strong without Bowen portraying Claire, and it appears the creators share this sentiment. We’re grateful we don’t have to ponder what might have been too drastic, particularly given the hints of reunions on the horizon.
If you’d like to catch Julie Bowen and the rest of the cast in Modern Family, you can stream it using a Peacock or Hulu membership.
