As a long-time fan of Star Wars, I can say that my recent rekindled interest in the franchise is nothing short of miraculous. After years of feeling like the stories were repeating themselves and the weight of the universe becoming too much to bear, I found myself drifting away from the galaxy far, far away.
I have a confession to make, and I have a feeling I’m not alone. After devotedly watching the Star Wars movies in order since I was a kid, I’ve been pretty uninterested in Disney+’s offerings from the universe. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely attempted to watch multiple shows from a galaxy far, far away on the streaming platform, from The Mandalorian Season 1 to Obi-Wan Kenobi. But considering each time I have for a few years now, I’ve found myself getting either pretty bored, confused or disappointed, I’ve simply decided the franchise is no longer my thing. That is, until this year rolled along.
Without a doubt, my thoughts are based on personal viewpoints. If you’re an ardent Star Wars enthusiast who craves constant updates, my opinions might not resonate with you significantly. However, if we share some common ground (as I’ve noticed in discussions with relatives and friends), I’d like to discuss why Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has managed to draw me back into the franchise, and how The Acolyte contributed to this rekindling.
The Force Is Strong With My Star Wars Fatigue
As a less dedicated fan of “Star Wars,” I’ve found the recent shows from the universe to be overly complex in terms of deep lore, and they haven’t quite lived up to the quality I associate with the movies that I eagerly anticipated every few years. Moreover, there’s an argument to be made that there’s simply too much “Star Wars” content being produced now, leading me to feel overwhelmed or burnt out on “Star Wars.
In today’s era of streaming, it’s become clear that what truly captures people’s attention in movies and TV is when a production feels like a unique and significant “event.” Take Barbie or Wicked as examples! When a topic becomes the subject of widespread conversation, I find myself eager to catch up by attending a movie premiere or tuning in promptly.
Back when Star Wars was just movies, or even at the beginning of The Mandalorian for instance, they were a major event. I’d set my alarm clock to wake up hours earlier so I could be among the first to watch more Star Wars, and that’s saying something because I don’t usually like getting up early. Fast forward five years, and my response is often “Meh, another Star Wars premiere? I’ll catch it at a later time.” In fact, I’ve missed quite a few of them since then.
I Tuned Into The Skeleton Crew Premiere, And I Could Feel It Finally Thawing Out
On Monday just gone, I received a notification from my Disney+ app stating that the initial episodes of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” would be streamable that very night. As most shows on my 2024 TV schedule have already aired, I found myself with some spare time and decided to watch it. I’m thrilled I did!
Instead of needing to watch previous series like The Clone Wars or prepare for more Skywalker Saga connections to follow a story, Skeleton Crew offers a refreshingly new perspective within the franchise that doesn’t require prior knowledge or homework. I eagerly moved on to the second episode as soon as the first one ended, only to be disappointed when it concluded too quickly.
The story titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” focuses on a child residing within the realm of the Star Wars galaxy, in a suburban area particular to it. This character has an issue that appears minor compared to the events portrayed in the franchise thus far – he’s late for a crucial career exam and, in his panic, chooses an unconventional route to school. On this hasty detour, he encounters a strange spacecraft, leading to a chain of events that eventually whisk him and companions into hyperspace.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the latest Star Wars series through the eyes of a gang of kids, free from franchise politics. It had an 80s Steven Spielberg vibe, making it a pure joy to watch. Plus, there’s a hint of something larger and more thrilling in the works with high-stakes yet to come. I can’t wait! After finishing the episodes, my curiosity was piqued, and I ended up catching up on Andor too.
But, I Wouldn’t Have Given Skeleton Crew A Chance If It Wasn’t For The Acolyte
I’m really excited about the new series “Skeleton Crew” and perhaps the whole “Star Wars” universe once more, but I’d like to share some thoughts on my return to the franchise. Prior to this week’s premiere of “Skeleton Crew”, I tried out a different show called “The Acolyte”. I had been told that it didn’t rely on a character that I was expected to already know. Watching that show rekindled my interest in the franchise, making the essence of it feel fresh and vibrant again.
In simpler terms,
I want it to feel shiny again, and shows like The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew are finally doing that job. They are exploring new corners of the universe rather than mining characters from 1977 over and over and over again. Coming up in the near future, it seems like we’ll be getting a mix of both, and I’m happy that Star Wars may perhaps be catering to both casual and heavily-invested fans, and those who have been as fatigued about the expansiveness of the world as I have been. I just don’t get why The Acolyte was axed so quickly, when it could have been the dawn of something new in its own right.
I’m thrilled about the upcoming premieres of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” every Monday, which is a treat for Disney+ subscribers like myself (or for those who want to catch up on “The Acolyte” if they missed it).
