I Was Annoyed About One Moment In Twisters, And I Just Found Out Steven Spielberg Is To Blame

As a huge fan of disaster movies and romantic stories, I was both excited and skeptical when I heard that “Twisters” was hitting theaters in 2024. Having watched the film recently, I have to say that I was generally pleased with what I saw, but there’s one thing that left me feeling a bit unsatisfied: the lack of a romantic moment between Kate and Tyler at the end.

A few days ago, I shared my thoughts on the revised ending of “Twisters” where I appreciated several elements. I was glad that Kate, Tyler, and Javi ended up reuniting at an airport, which added a satisfying touch to the story. The humorous interaction between Powell’s character Tyler and Paul Scheer as the airport attendant was another highlight for me. However, I wasn’t completely sold on the film’s conclusion since we missed out on seeing a goodbye kiss between Kate and Tyler as he helped her with her luggage. It seems that this anti-climactic ending can be attributed to Steven Spielberg‘s involvement in the production.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing “Twisters” after reading generally positive reviews and its impressive box office performance over the weekend. However, while I enjoyed the film overall, I have to admit that there was an aspect of it that left me feeling annoyed rather than wowed – the romance. And it turns out, I’m not alone in this feeling. Daisy Edgar-Jones recently revealed to Collider that another well-known director was responsible for the underdeveloped romantic moment in the movie. So while this disappointment is a bummer, it doesn’t completely derail my enjoyment of an otherwise enjoyable ride.

It strikes me as a signature touch from Spielberg, don’t you agree? Have you figured out what I mean? I believe this element prevents the movie from becoming overly predictable. To me, it signifies that their journey doesn’t end here; they continue to be connected by their mutual enthusiasm for something.

The last portion of her remark aligns with my emotions upon seeing the finale of “Twister.” Although Kate and Tyler successfully applied her formula to aid Oklahoma residents, the ending seemed incomplete to me. The post-credits scene provided a glimpse into what followed, such as Ben’s article publication. However, it appears that there are more developments to be explored, potentially in a sequel, leaving Chung and team with ample opportunity to unveil captivating moments later on.

I’ve heard from Powell himself that a kiss was planned for the movie. He made this revelation in an interview, and there are viral videos on TikTok and Instagram to back up his claim. However, despite having the opportunity, they ultimately decided against sharing a kiss on-screen.

Edgar-Jones isn’t the only one who supports the absence of a kiss between Powell and herself in the movie’s finale. Chung shared with EW that it wasn’t an insult to his actors but rather a personal decision for him. He felt that the scene didn’t align with his vision and seemed more like a crowd-pleaser instead.

Audiences seem to have different preferences now regarding on-screen kisses compared to before. I attempted to include one in my performance, but the reaction was quite divided – this isn’t due to how the kiss was executed.

In simpler terms, I’m content with being out of touch with current pop culture trends now that I’m in my thirties. However, I must admit, there was a moment during the action movie’s ending when I wished for a romantic resolution. Perhaps the timing wasn’t right for that kiss scene. Personally, I find the suitcase scene in the film concluding to be fitting, and I believe Spielberg didn’t go wrong with this choice. If we had experienced stronger emotional moments earlier on, the ending might have felt more satisfying.

These two not only endured several tornados as a team but also had the chance to meet personally, such as in a barn or by the pool post-tornado, or even before they assisted in rescuing people in the town towards the film’s end. There were numerous possibilities for a romantic kiss between them.

Although ending a film with a kiss might seem overused, especially for younger audiences, the notion that Tyler and Kate were merely friends with romantic prospects feels inauthentic as well. In critical moments of life or death, people can develop strong connections quickly. It’s hard for me to accept that at some point, this confident and smitten man who pursues what he wants in life wouldn’t have attempted a kiss towards Kate.
