As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of narrative-driven games like The Witcher 3 or Life is Strange, I can empathize with Lorraine Bracco‘s feelings about the conclusion of her character’s storyline on The Sopranos. Like many gamers, I too have invested countless hours into the lives of digital characters, only to see their arcs end in ways that left me feeling unsatisfied or heartbroken.
Despite the high acclaim that HBO’s “The Sopranos” has received, there are those who have criticized certain narrative choices made by creator David Chase and his team. Apart from the divisive series ending, some have criticized how Tony Soprano’s relationship with his longtime therapist, Jennifer Melfi, was resolved. Lorraine Bracco, who portrayed Dr. Melfi, is among those who express dissatisfaction with the storyline’s conclusion. Recently, Bracco reiterated her disapproval of the ending and shared her theories about what happened to Dr. Melfi and Tony after the finale.
In the second last episode of “The Sopranos,” titled “The Blue Comet,” Lorraine Bracco’s character, Melfi, made her final appearance. This episode finds Melfi questioning whether Tony Soprano, her sociopathic patient, is using their therapy sessions to further his criminal activities. After reviewing the results from a study on this topic, Melfi decides to end her relationship with Tony definitively during their next session. This decision leaves Tony, the New Jersey mob boss, taken aback.
It’s clear that James Gandolfini’s beloved character wasn’t the only one who felt emotional about that storyline choice, as Lorraine Bracco has expressed her frustrations about how her character was handled. In an interview with Jessica Shaw of Sirius XM, she shared these feelings on YouTube. Not only did she confess to feeling “heartbroken,” but the iconic actress from Goodfellas also recounted a question she posed to David Chase regarding her character’s development.
I felt deeply upset and disappointed about how things ended with David. I believed his actions were unfair and inappropriate. I was frustrated, too. I expressed my feelings to him by saying, “It’s hard to invest five years of your life into someone only for them to walk away like that.” I added, “That’s not right,” and that seemed to be the end of it.
Indeed, the former Rizzoli & Isles star raised a valid question to the well-known TV writer and producer. Even someone who was content with how Tony and Melfi’s relationship concluded in the series might find themselves agreeing that Melfi’s decision mirrors life’s unpredictable and frank nature at times. As she expresses her concerns this time, however, the 70-year-old actress also hinted that there’s a possibility that Soprano and his doctor met again after the show’s final episode, suggesting hope for their reunion.
It seems to me that they might have run into each other at various restaurants and similar places. To be honest, I’m not certain. However, there’s a part of me that hopes they both took some time apart, and then reconciled – perhaps during their therapy sessions. That’s something I could imagine happening.

I Really Enjoyed HBO’s Sopranos Documentary, But There’s One Topic I Wish Would’ve Been Covered
Whether Tony lived through the events of The Sopranos finale remains uncertain, as the show’s creator David Chase has kept his interpretation ambiguous. However, it’s intriguing that an actress from Blue Bloods holds such strong feelings for her character and speculates positively about Tony’s potential fate.
