As a seasoned fan who’s been following Lara Croft’s adventures since the early days of pixelated gaming, I must admit that my initial skepticism about an animated Tomb Raider series was as thick as the jungle Lara often finds herself in. However, one look at the trailer for Netflix’s The Legend of Lara Croft and all doubts were washed away faster than a river rapids chase sequence.
Initially, when I learned that Alicia Vikander’s Lara Croft didn’t get a second Tomb Raider movie, I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about an animated Tomb Raider series coming to Netflix in 2024, even with Hayley Atwell as the voice of the lead character. However, after watching the first trailer for Netflix’s The Legend of Lara Croft, I am now fully prepared and eager to accompany the intelligent archaeologist on her adventures across the globe.
In the tradition of carrying forward the storyline from the Survivor trilogy of Tomb Raider games, this latest venture embarks on a fresh adventure featuring our daring and curious protagonist, navigating thrilling challenges in breathtaking settings.
After the occurrences in the Survivor series, Lara Croft has opted to explore more risky solo journeys, leaving her companions behind. However, a Chinese artifact of great danger and power, once housed at Croft Manor, is stolen by a thief who seems remarkably linked to her. This sets off a global adventure for Lara, leading her to ancient tombs shrouded in mystery, where she’ll be compelled to grapple with her true identity and contemplate the type of hero she aspires to be.
One reason I’m particularly excited for the episodic release of Tomb Raider is due to the stunning and dynamic visuals provided by Powerhouse Animation. This studio has also produced captivating animation for shows like Castlevania, its spinoff Nocturne – Seis Manos, Blood of Zeus, Masters of the Universe, and Skull Island.
Powerhouse’s design shines particularly in grand, intricate environments, and their action scenes never fail to deliver an electrifying punch, as evident in the trailer.
“Following the cancellation of Tomb Raider 2, I’ve been reflecting on the possibility of stepping into Alicia Vikander’s shoes as everyone’s favorite adventurer, Lara Croft. It’s a role I’ve admired and would be thrilled to bring my own spin to.”
As a gamer myself, I’m excited to share that I’m not mixing it up with Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action Lara Croft series on Prime Video. Instead, I’m talking about an animated series in the making! Tasha Huo, who has penned both ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ and ‘Red Sonja’, is taking the reins as showrunner and executive producer for this project. The big names behind it all include Legendary Television, dj2 Entertainment, and its CEO Dmitri M. Johnson, who has been instrumental in bringing the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films to life, and has several other video game adaptations at different stages of production, from ‘Just Cause’ to ‘Dredge’. Can’t wait to see what this collaboration brings!
Starting this coming Thursday, October 10th, you’ll have the opportunity to stream “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” as part of your Netflix subscription!
