'I Was Nervous Going In.' Thought Michael Keaton Was Jazzed To Play Beetlejuice Again? It Was More Complicated Than That

As a devoted fan of Tim Burton’s quirky and imaginative films, I must admit that seeing the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel come to life was like witnessing a childhood dream unfold before my eyes. The original film left such an indelible impression on me, and the idea of revisiting the eerie yet endearing world of the Maitlands and the Deetz family felt like a homecoming of sorts.

Fans of Beetlejuice were thrilled beyond belief after three-plus decades, when the news broke that a sequel was indeed in the works. Some familiar faces from the original Beetlejuice movie would be back, and though everyone seemed eager to step into their old roles again, it appeared that Beetlejuice himself was feeling quite apprehensive.

For years, fans have eagerly awaited a sequel to the hugely successful film “Beetlejuice”. Recently, Michael Keaton shared with Today that he felt quite apprehensive about reprising his role as Beetlejuice, understanding that audience expectations would be lofty and fearing that he might disappoint everyone. Keaton explained…

Initially, I felt anxious since I didn’t want to botch things up and let everyone down, truthfully. But when I glanced at myself dressed up in the mirror, I thought, ‘This is it.’ The tale, surprisingly strong, turned out to be a real gem. With such talented actors around me, some of the pressure was alleviated.

In the follow-up to “Beetlejuice”, the actor portraying Beetlejuice is anticipated to deliver a strong performance. Michael Keaton, aware of the pressure, felt anxious, but he seemed to ease his worries as he believed the overall success of the movie wouldn’t solely depend on his acting. He praised the cast of “Beetlejuice: Beetlejuice” and the well-crafted story, stating that their quality ensured that not all attention would be focused on him.

In the initial film, Beetlejuice is scarcely present, yet Michael Keaton’s impact on the movie is so profound that he remains unforgettable even with minimal screen time. Interestingly, he also doesn’t overdo his role in the sequel, thereby emphasizing the significance of the other actors’ performances.

In more casual terms, Michael Keaton has shared with us that revisiting the character from “Multiplicity” is a role he finds appealing. If he were to take on this challenge again, it would undoubtedly demand a significant amount of effort from him to potentially match the original success.

The existence of that script might have been the crucial factor in finally bringing about the sequel to Beetlejuice. Following the original film, there was a concept for a sequel titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, which lived up to its quirky name. However, that idea never materialized, and despite persistent whispers of a possible Beetlejuice 2, it never came to fruition.

It seems everything fell into place quite well indeed! The movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has been an impressive success, earning over $100 million in its domestic opening weekend and amassing more than $375 million globally. Though director Tim Burton has hinted at reservations about a sequel, it’s hard to imagine the studio won’t be considering one given such triumphant results.
