Nimrat Kaur has no problem being unmarried, but her supposed ‘well-wishers’ continue to inquire about marriage. This line of questioning started when she turned 30. It wasn’t until the release of her 2013 film The Lunchbox that these unwanted comments subsided. In a recent interview, Kaur admitted that like many other women, she has been asked about marriage frequently. However, she stated that it was only after The Lunchbox that she started receiving acknowledgment and appreciation. She also mentioned that the respect she earned was largely due to Irrfan Khan’s presence in the film.
As an ardent admirer speaking candidly, in a heartfelt conversation with Showsha, Nimrat Kaur shared an insightful perspective. She made it clear she wasn’t casting blame on those who doubted her potential; instead, she acknowledged that it was Irrfan Khan’s presence in the project that catapulted both her work and her own credibility into the limelight. Prior to The Lunchbox, she found herself frequently advised to tie the knot. Yet, once the film achieved success, questions about marriage took a backseat for me.
In her own words, Kaur explained that the film served as a convincing tool for others to recognize her skills, ultimately gaining their admiration. Simultaneously, she recognized that these individuals are often swayed by societal norms, and thus, she chooses not to blame or resent them for it.
She too challenged the notion that marriage is the sole route for a woman to achieve a sense of stability. Reminiscing about her relocation to Mumbai prior to 2005, she reflected on how others presumed she’d eventually go back home and conform to the traditional female lifestyle.
Nimrat noted that when it seems like her career isn’t advancing as anticipated, or if she’s not making enough money or accomplishing what others think she should, people often advise her to marry and establish a home, implying she is incomplete or unstable until she gets married.
The Kull actor articulated her preference for patience over impulsiveness when it comes to marriage, stating that she’d rather wait for a meaningful one as opposed to rushing into an empty one. Drawing attention to the numerous shallow marriages she has observed, she remarked that individuals in such surface-level relationships often appear more distressed and troubled than a woman who chooses to remain unmarried.
In my experience, I encourage everyone to respect my individuality. It’s fascinating how those who have braved the path of making bold choices themselves sometimes project their conditioned beliefs onto others, particularly when they witness us breaking free from conventional norms.
