`I Was Terrified by The Wild Robot’s Possums`

This year’s award season is in full gear, and I’m making an effort to check out the 2025 Oscar nominees. One such film that caught my attention was Dreamworks’ latest release, “The Wild Robot,” which can be streamed with a Peacock subscription. This Best Animated Feature nominee offers a blend of action and deep emotion that I found captivating. However, I must admit that the movie also left me genuinely scared for several reasons.

As a film enthusiast, I feel it’s important to clarify that some of my reactions might seem a tad extreme. This is largely because I harbor deep-seated fears, particularly towards possums, raccoons, and skunks – creatures that are notorious for their nocturnal activities. In the captivating novel The Wild Robot, these animals play significant roles, which only amplifies my apprehension. To add to this, the 2024 animated adaptation promises a rollercoaster of thrills that I can’t help but anticipate with a mix of excitement and trepidation.

During the entire 102-minute span of the film, Lupita Nyong’o portrays Roz, a character who interacts with diverse woodland creatures on an island. Although Mark Hamill’s Grizzly Bear Thorn was intended to be terrifying, it was the smaller animals that I found genuinely unsettling due to their four-legged movements. This feeling was particularly heightened in a striking scene where Roz is ambushed by a band of aggressive raccoons, an encounter that leaves me on edge whenever I pass one in my daily life.

I can’t help but feel anxious when it comes to possums, and it seems they’ve managed to outshine everyone else in the latest Dreamworks production. The character of Pinktail, a mother Possum skillfully portrayed by Catherine O’Hara in “Wild Robot”, is nothing short of amusing. She and her brood are consistently entertaining, employing dark humor and attempting (unsuccessfully) to feign death, making the film quite engaging.

Due to my intense fear of possums, the book “The Wild Robot” turned out to be a series of unexpectedly scary moments for me. What added to my confusion was that it frequently followed with a hearty laugh. Truly, it was an emotional rollercoaster ride.

Absolutely, the film itself was filled with numerous terrifying scenes. The specter of mortality constantly hung over Kit Connor’s character, Brightbill. Critics at TopMob highly commended the movie, finding it surprisingly action-packed. Despite streaming it on a relaxed Sunday morning, I encountered more excitement than I had expected… particularly from the possums, raccoons, and skunks. It’s funny how phobias don’t always follow logic, but I’m guessing someone must have felt the same way watching the Academy Award nominee.

The film ‘The Wild Robot’ can currently be streamed on Peacock. We’ll find out on March 2nd if it has a chance to win an Academy Award. Here’s hoping Academy voters aren’t afraid of robots, like I am.
