I Watched It's What's Inside. Why Aren't More People Spreading The Word About The Body-Swap Thriller?

As someone who has navigated through the tumultuous seas of friendship and personal growth, I found “It’s What’s Inside” to be a captivating exploration of human flaws and the complexities of relationships. The characters, while far from likable, were intriguingly imperfect – much like real-life individuals we encounter in our daily lives.

⚠️ Caution is advised! The information below contains significant spoilers for the 2024 Netflix film titled “It’s What’s Inside”. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, please be mindful!

Among the 2024 movie lineup, “What’s Inside” stands out as one of the most impressive and innovative releases, despite Netflix seemingly trying to keep it under wraps like a hidden gem. I recently watched this film by Greg Jardin, a body-swap sci-fi thriller, and was astonished to discover that there was little buzz surrounding its release, and hardly anyone seems to be discussing it – not even a peep!

The movie centers around a group of friends who get together for a pre-wedding party/reunion (#reuphia) where they play a wild party game that involves switching bodies with the help of a mysterious device. A cool concept and spin on the body-swap genre, a stellar cast, and a superb execution make It’s What’s Inside a unique and transfixing experience. But still, no one is really talking about one of the best Netflix movies, and it’s quite baffling…

I Didn’t Know Anything About It’s What’s Inside Until My Wife Sent Me A TikTok

In my role at an entertainment news outlet, I’m often the one suggesting obscure films to my wife, persistently urging her to watch them despite her lack of knowledge. However, the situation was reversed when it came to “It’s What’s Inside“. She had stumbled upon a TikTok video claiming it was one of the most wildly terrifying movies on Netflix, and I was equally unaware of it.

To my surprise, I stumbled upon an intriguing movie snippet on TikTok, little did I expect that it would lead me to one of the most gripping, captivating, and indelible cinematic journeys in recent memory. However, there’s a predicament with its release strategy – despite being one of the standout hidden gems of the year, there seems to be minimal buzz around it.

The Movie Shows Just How Dark A Body-Swap Story Can Get

Similar to many body-swap films, “It’s What’s Inside” initially delights in exploring the concept. When the main gang of pals experiment with the enigmatic gadget to trade places and play a game aimed at uncovering each other’s real selves, they generally appreciate the unique experience. However, things soon take an unexpected and drastically darker turn. And I found it utterly captivating.

Instead of depicting a scenario where someone is stuck in another person’s body, which does occur in some stories, this film presents a twist: two characters meet an unfortunate death in a terrible accident while investigating the new bodies they had found. I found this premise intriguing because, unlike what we might expect, once your mind and soul depart from your mortal form—one that has been gruesomely killed—they can’t revert back to the dead body. We’ve crossed a point of no return now, and there’s no going back to our previous reality.

Despite briefly slipping into typical genre conventions towards the end, the film’s departure from the usual course and the extremely grim scenario that arises when things go disastrously awry in the game were an absolute joy to witness.

I Didn’t Find Any Of The Characters Likable, But I Think That’s The Point

In a unique twist, the film “It’s What’s Inside” manages to present an extraordinary rarity – no character is endearing or admirable. It appears that director Greg Jardin deliberately designed these self-centered, oblivious, superficial, and spiteful individuals who seem to connect primarily through shared tragic experiences such as the loss of a parent, expulsion from college, and other such events. Remarkably, I find this characteristic utterly fascinating.

In “It’s What’s Inside,” you won’t come across characters undergoing significant mental transformations (at least not dramatically). However, this works well for a film like this. I didn’t feel empathy for any of the characters, except perhaps David W. Thompson as Forbes, but most of them seem to bring their predicaments upon themselves in one way or another.

In the film, each character – from James Morosini’s enigmatic Cyrus, who struggles with communication and borders on creepiness, to Brittany O’Grady’s Shelby, who is overly eager to please others yet risks losing her own identity, and Alycia Debnam-Carey’s Nikki, the social media influencer consumed by online fame – has significant imperfections that they often fail to address. Remarkably, when these flaws are addressed, it’s not a result of their personal decisions or choice.

However, it’s not necessary for us to admire the characters in a film for us to appreciate the movie, and this certainly applies to “It’s What’s Inside“, where the so-called friends are far from endearing.

Writer/Director Greg Jardin Kept The Unique Premise From Getting Too Confusing Through Clever Cinematography

Despite certain aspects of the ‘It’s What’s Inside’ finale that might seem puzzling upon closer examination, director Greg Jardin skillfully maintains clarity amidst the intriguing premise to prevent confusion.

Initially in the film, Brooke (played by Reina Hardesty) unveils her unique art pieces which alter dramatically based on varying color filters. Later in the plot, after a body swap occurs, Jardin employs this innovation to distinguish truth from lies among characters, thereby maintaining clarity for viewers amidst the intrigue. Cinematographer Kevin Fletcher skillfully enhances these sequences with dynamic 360-degree shots, ensuring easy identification of characters even during chaotic or complex scenes.

This Movie Would Have Been Promoted Like Crazy If Blumhouse Or A24 Were Behind it

It seems that It’s What’s Inside hasn’t been generating a lot of excitement, possibly due to the fact that Netflix isn’t marketing it as heavily as production companies like Blumhouse or A24 might if they were the ones distributing this clever and original film.

This thriller shares similarities with the critically acclaimed A24 horror film “Talk to Me”, particularly in their shared themes of parties disrupted when attendees fail to respect unknown forces. Much like “Talk to Me”, which garnered over $92 million at the box office (according to Box Office Mojo), this film generated a lot of buzz and was the subject of many conversations, suggesting it could have been equally successful on Netflix.
