I Watched So Much Anime In 2024, Here Are 4 That Are Great, And 2 Others I’d Skip

As someone who has spent countless hours huddled under blankets, engrossed in the vibrant world of anime, I can confidently say that 2024 was a truly remarkable year for this captivating medium. The four series that stood out to me were “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”, “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” (yes, it’s worth mentioning twice), “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” (I swear, this one’s a keeper!), and “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”. Each of these masterpieces offered a unique blend of captivating storytelling, stunning animation, and themes that resonated deeply with my own life experiences.

Now, I know what you might be thinking: “Is this person serious? They mentioned the same series four times?” Well, let me tell you something – it’s not every day we come across a series as phenomenal as “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”. But in all seriousness, if you haven’t checked out this gem yet, I highly recommend giving it a watch. It’s like a warm hug from an animated elven mage, and who doesn’t need more of those in their life?

On a slightly less magical note, I must also mention the series that left me feeling a bit disappointed: “Uzumaki” and “Ninja Kamui”. Both had potential to be great, but unfortunately, they fell short. It’s always a bittersweet experience when an anime doesn’t live up to its full potential, much like a half-eaten slice of pizza that was once promising but ended up being a letdown. But fear not, my fellow anime enthusiasts! There are still countless series out there waiting to be discovered and cherished. So, keep exploring, keep dreaming, and most importantly, keep watching anime!

It’s the end of another year – you know what that means.

Indeed, dear fans of anime! I’m excited to share some thoughts on the standout anime from this year. The upcoming 2024 TV lineup is jam-packed with fresh content, and even the 2025 premieres are starting to catch our attention with some notable comebacks. However, among all the intriguing TV shows, anime remains my preferred genre.

2024 saw an abundance of fantastic anime, as well as a few that might not be worth your time. I’d like to highlight four excellent anime choices and steer clear of two that you can safely avoid.

Watch: Solo Leveling

Who else among us can hardly contain our excitement for the upcoming Season 2 of Solo Leveling in January 2025? Needless to say, I’m equally eager!

Solo Leveling” is a narrative adaptation from its namesake web novel, focusing on a protagonist who’s chosen by an enigmatic system known as ‘The Program’ to amplify his strength through defeating one monster after another. Along the way, he embarks on a journey to uncover the origins of these monsters and the reasons behind his newly discovered abilities.

Hey there! I’ve seen a lot of folks out there say that the main character in this story, Sung Jinwoo, is just too powerful, but let me tell you something? I don’t care one bit about it because I absolutely adore stories like these. You see, I’m a big fan of tales about underdogs who put in all the hard work and sweat to become as strong as they can be, especially when they’ve been given a second chance at life. I mean, who wouldn’t want to cheer for someone who’s determined not to let that opportunity slip through their fingers? So, honestly, how can you not find something like that enjoyable?

This show is an excellent choice if you’ve already enjoyed top-tier dark anime or appreciate video game adaptations, as it features numerous references that gaming enthusiasts will appreciate. Its diverse content makes it appealing to a wide range of viewers, so I would suggest giving it a try for those seeking quality voice acting.

Watch: Dandadan

This anime…is wacky as heck. But it’s a fun time.

“Dandadan” – Available on Netflix, this series revolves around two high school companions who engage in a wager about the existence of ghosts or aliens. However, an unexpected turn occurs when one gets kidnapped by aliens while the other gets haunted by a spirit. Later, they reunite and employ their newly acquired abilities to combat foes from both the supernatural and extraterrestrial realms.

For enthusiasts of body horror and “The X-Files”, this series is an absolute must-see due to several compelling factors. It’s undeniably peculiar and unconventional, yet in a captivating way that leaves you puzzled after watching it on your TV screen, but still chuckling and appreciating the show’s charm.

frankly, no anime has left me as bewildered since I watched the first season of “Chainsaw Man” in 2022, and let me tell you, it takes a great deal to confuse me so swiftly. But trust me, it was well worth it, and you’ll find yourself thoroughly entertained for hours on end. In fact, they have already confirmed a second season!

Watch: Delicious In Dungeon

If you’re as passionate about Dungeons & Dragons as I am and have a keen interest in food, then you might find yourself captivated by “Delicious in Dungeon.” This anime is based on the manga of the same name, where a band of adventurers, unable to defeat a dragon, must navigate a fantastical realm while surviving. To make it through, they consume the monsters they slay as they go.

I’m really fond of this series; in fact, I’ll openly admit that I usually lean towards darker anime titles. For instance, shows like “Attack on Titan” or “Jujutsu Kaisen” have a way of making me feel as though my heart is being wrenched out by the end of every episode.

This program has such a cozy feel to it. Despite battling monsters and plenty of action, it’s the stunning graphics and their ability to make monster-derived food look enticing that leave me craving more. In fact, I end up feeling hungry more times than not after watching this series.

Watch: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of fantasy television shows and manga, I can confidently say that “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is a must-watch for any fan of the genre. Having grown up with tales of elves, magic, and epic adventures, this anime takes me back to those cherished moments of my youth. The story follows Frieren, an elven mage on a quest to find a place where souls rest in order to reunite with one of her fallen comrades. With its richly developed characters, captivating plot, and stunning animation, this series is sure to delight fans of all ages. Don’t miss out on this magical journey!

I’d rather not give too many details about this show as I firmly believe it’s worth the watch. The animation is stunning, and the world-building is meticulously done, but what truly sets this series apart is its ability to explore profound, emotional topics that resonate with everyone.

Regardless if it’s matters of love, life, friendships, or even death, this piece promises to deliver an impactful punch that will make you question your perspective on the world. Plus, who wouldn’t appreciate a touch of enchantment along the way?

Skip: Uzumaki

I almost don’t even need to explain why you should skip this, but because I must, here you go.

Uzumaki debuted on Max and is a horror anime adapted from a manga with the same title. The story revolves around the residents of Kurouzu-cho, a town experiencing a mysterious curse, and how our main characters gradually find themselves ensnared by it too.

This series seemed incredibly promising, especially for a horror enthusiast like me who appreciates top-notch films in that genre. However, this anime is extraordinarily difficult to endure. While they aimed to adopt an art style consistent with the manga, the result appears subpar and noticeably diminishes the overall quality.

It’s unfortunate, as Uzumaki is truly one of the top-tier horror mangas available. It requires an appropriate adaptation to match its quality.

Skip: Ninja Kamui

An illustration of something that had the potential to be extraordinary but ultimately failed to impress is _Ninja Kamui_. This narrative follows a former ninja assassin yearning for a peaceful existence. However, when his past re-emerges and results in the loss of his loved ones, he resolves to seek vengeance and adopt a new persona.

Instead of the other listings, Ninja Kamui stands out as an original anime production, meaning it wasn’t adapted from a manga. This distinction becomes apparent as the series unfolds. Initially, it captivates, but as episodes progress, the narrative gradually loses coherence and seems to be dominated by action scenes rather than engaging story development.

2024 saw an abundance of fantastic anime series that you might not have discovered yet. Here are some of the ones I particularly enjoyed; perhaps they’ll help you find your next favorite show as well!
