I Watched Terrifier 3 A Month Ago, And Still Haven't Been Able To Get One Gruesome Atrocity Out Of My Head (No, Not The Opening)

As a seasoned horror aficionado with a penchant for the macabre and grotesque, I can confidently say that Terrifier 3 has left an indelible mark on my psyche. The scene involving Art the Clown, a tube, rats, and a throat was nothing short of a masterclass in visceral horror. It’s a sequence that, much like a particularly stubborn stain, refuses to be scrubbed from memory.

Warning to all horror enthusiasts who haven’t seen it yet: Our review contains spoilers for the movie Terrifier 3, so proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it.

Viewers who choose to watch Damien Leone’s films, whether within or outside of the Terrifier series, typically aren’t seeking out nuanced, thought-provoking journeys into human emotions. Instead, they’re eager for gruesome scenes involving flying body parts and gushing blood, as well as the chilling grin and wide-eyed gaze of Art the Clown capturing every grotesque moment. The more extreme, the better, and a larger budget allowed Terrifier 3 to explore previously uncharted levels of intensity.

Leone and actor David Howard Thornton’s talents with grisly scenes and special effects propelled the gruesome sequel to the top spot at the box office during its opening weekend, making me wonder about Art the Clown’s influence on future horror films’ level of disturbance. However, I can hardly envision anything in the near future that could surpass a scene from Terrifier 3, which has been deeply etched into my subconscious ever since I witnessed it at its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2024 in Austin.

Given that I can’t erase this haunting memory from my mind, I might as well share its strange allure. Just to clarify, I’m not referring to the controversial opening scene involving Art taking lives, but rather the events that followed, which were far more unsettling than that scene could ever be.

Yes, I’m 100% Talking About The Scene With The Tube And The Rats And The Throat And The Yuck

In various disturbing actions, Art the Clown from the film “Terrifier” has been involved, such as urinating on a fake Santa. The manner in which he eliminated Sienna and Jonathan’s aunt Jess seemed like a gruesome blend of the board game MouseTrap and a tutorial on methods to eliminate characters in Sims, only to have someone spill gasoline and trash over it in an effort to…prevail?

In retrospect, it seemed almost inevitable that rats would play a pivotal role in the film’s most disturbing scene given their frequent appearances. However, I can hardly be faulted for not being fully prepared for such an occurrence, especially considering the gruesome fate of the character Greg. After all, predicting a sequence of events like this is no easy task.

  • Art jam-hammers a thick plastic tube down Jess’ throat, essentially killing her
  • Art then forces live rats down into the tube, with a blowtorch ensuring any hesitance the rodents feel is only temporary
  • Instead of just, I dunno, allowing that fucked-up biosystem to exist without further trauma, Art cuts Jess’ throat, allowing the rats to complete the circuit by pouring out of the bloody wound

It’s likely that some of the reverberating noise swirling around my chaotic recollections is me exclaiming and cheering as the event unfolded. I’m positive I responded in some fashion to the unveiling of Jonathan’s head, but it might have been something more like, “Wow, that’s a shock to see with the same eyes that had just seen that horrifying rat-tube neck ordeal.” Now, everything else seems insignificant when compared to Art the Clown’s atrocities.

In simpler terms, it’s possible that studio executives might have suggested him to tone down certain scenes in Terrifier 3 before he decided to stick with independent filmmaking. Scenes such as Victoria self-harming during masturbation or Art using a chainsaw for sodomy could potentially be more memorable if they also included elements like tubes and rats. This combination seems to be the key to creating a disturbing impact.

Will the last installment of the Terrifier film series surpass Art’s horrors as claimed by Damien Leone? Perhaps it might exceed in certain aspects, but it’s unlikely to surprise viewers with scenes involving rats bursting through neck openings, a trope that seems to have been covered extensively in the previous films.
