As a long-time Tron enthusiast who grew up with the original films and spent countless hours exploring The Grid in my imagination, I must admit that I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming sequel, Tron: Ares. While the absence of Daft Punk leaves a gaping hole in the electronic soundscape of the franchise, the prospect of Nine Inch Nails taking over the scoring duties fills me with anticipation.
The much-expected comeback to “The Grid” is getting closer, as “Tron: Ares,” one of the highly anticipated movies in 2025’s lineup, approaches. Interestingly, many of the cast for “Ares” are newcomers, and unfortunately, Daft Punk, who created the music for “Tron: Legacy,” disbanded in 2021, so they won’t be involved this time. Despite my wish that Daft Punk would also score “Ares,” director Joachim Rønning’s recent sneak peek at the upcoming Disney film has me excited!
Since Daft Punk isn’t active anymore, the job of scoring for “Tron: Ares” was given to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who together form Nine Inch Nails. While they will draw some inspiration from Daft Punk for this film’s soundtrack, director Joseph Kosinski told Empire that the music of Nine Inch Nails aligns well with the atmosphere that “Ares” is aiming to create.
Featuring music by Nine Inch Nails, this edition will have a rougher, more mechanized feel. It’s crucial for me to differentiate The Grid from reality, and the industrial sound of Nine Inch Nails aligns flawlessly with the gritty new Tron universe we are developing.
In essence, the upcoming film titled “Tron: Ares” shares the same universe as the initial “Tron” movies, but it’s designed to serve as a new beginning for the series with Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn. The storyline follows Jared Leto’s character, Ares, a program dispatched from the digital realm into the real world on a perilous mission. This encounter marks humanity’s initial interaction with artificial intelligence entities, leading to speculation about the fate of Olivia Wilde’s Quorra, who left The Grid with Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn at the end of “Legacy“, but let’s save that topic for another occasion.
I’m eager to learn about how Nine Inch Nails’ music adapts to the grittier mood of Tron: Ares and how it distinguishes the digital world from the real one. Additionally, director Joachim Rønning hinted that despite the AI versus reality struggles, the film will maintain a strong human element. To quote him, “The movie will preserve its human core amidst the conflicts between artificial intelligence and reality.
In every narrative I seek out, there’s an impactful emotional heart. This movie might stir feelings deeper than viewers anticipate. Its theme revolves around the price we pay for our humanity.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that in the upcoming movie “Tron: Ares,” I’ll be joining forces with Jeff Bridges and Jared Leto. Alongside us, you’ll find Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minaj, Arturo Castro, and the incredible Gillian Anderson. The script for this adventure was penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Filming commenced in January and wrapped up in early May.
On October 10, 2025, the movie “Tron: Ares” will premiere in cinemas. To watch the initial two “Tron” films and the animated series “Tron: Uprising”, subscribe to Disney+.
