As a longtime fan of both the small and big screen, I can attest to the fact that some characters leave indelible marks on our hearts, and Boone Carlyle, portrayed by Ian Somerhalder in the groundbreaking series “Lost,” is one such character.
Prior to being recognized as Damon Salvatore, the charming undead character in The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder took on a completely different role in the inaugural season of the sci-fi enigma, Lost. Admirers of the show might be excused for forgetting his brief tenure as Boone Carlyle on the beloved series. Spanning over six years and 121 episodes, Lost provided viewers with a multitude of endearing survivors, detestable villains, perplexing mysteries to solve together with the characters, and profound character growth. Keeping up with all that was presented can be challenging, and given that it ended 14 years ago, even dedicated fans might find it difficult to remember every detail.
Boone Carlyle was among the 69 survivors we tracked on the mysterious island throughout the series, but due to his departure early in the show, it’s understandable that some might overlook him. However, despite not being a main character for all six seasons, he played a significant role during the first season and should not be underestimated, even though his appearances were limited mainly to the initial episodes.
Who Was Boone Carlyle?
On the widely acclaimed sci-fi mystery series, Somerhalder played Boone Carlyle. This character represents a significant shift from what fans of The Vampire Diaries are accustomed to seeing him as, demonstrating Somerhalder’s versatility as an actor in taking on roles that contrast greatly.
Initially, when the spectators are introduced to Boone following the crash of Flight 815, they immediately perceive him as someone eager to lend a hand wherever needed. The viewers witnessed his frantic search for supplies to aid Jack, a fellow passenger and doctor, in treating the injured. Just like all characters on the series, Boone’s past, motivations, and hardships unfold gradually through a mix of flashbacks depicting his former life and ongoing tales about his existence on the island.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I shared the emotional journey of the protagonist, feeling his pain stemming from his turbulent childhood and heartbreaking unrequited love for his step-sister Shannon. Cheering him on, I watched as he discovered his role on the island under Locke’s mentorship, forming a unique bond with the elder man through their mutual quest to unravel the island’s enigmas. In the end, his untimely demise at the close of season one left me bereft and longing for more of his story.
The audience came to recognize Boone as a compassionate, thoughtful individual who prioritized the well-being of other survivors. His sensitivity was evident from the start, demonstrated by his efforts to aid the wounded and his grief over those who had perished. As the first season unfolded, this selfless nature became increasingly apparent through his consistent readiness to jeopardize himself for the sake of others. A few instances of this were when he secretly took water to help a sick Claire and bravely risked his life to save Johanna from drowning.
Boone Carlyle Was the Unsung Hero of the First Season
Through memories of his past life, it became clear that Boone was a man who deeply cherished others and went to great lengths to assist those he held dear. This selfless inclination to prioritize loved ones and eagerness to help in any capacity, surprisingly, was the very factor that brought him to the island. His unwavering devotion to Shannon and desire to be of service to her is what initially took him to Australia, which eventually led him to board the ill-fated flight that left them all stranded.
Due to the complex structure of the show, with multiple characters to keep track of and primary and secondary characters playing significant roles, it’s effortless to overlook Boone’s crucial role in the first season of Lost. He assisted Sayid in triangulating the French signal, aided Locke in attempting to open the mysterious hatch on the island, and was instrumental in saving numerous other characters, some of whom were pivotal to the show as a whole. It’s hard to imagine where the main characters would have been if Boone hadn’t provided his valuable support during that initial season.
Boone’s mysterious positivity and habit of lending a hand whenever possible made his death at the end of the first season particularly poignant for viewers. He passed away in much the same way he lived – by trying to help those around him. In an effort to assist Locke in unraveling the island’s mysteries and the hatch, Boone tragically fell from a cliff and sustained fatal injuries. Even in his final moments, he demonstrated his true character through his readiness to sacrifice himself for the benefit of others. He declined life-saving treatment from Jack not because he wanted to die, but rather to spare valuable medical resources that might be needed by other survivors later on.
Did Ian Somerhalder Ever Return to Lost?
After Boone passed away, Somerhalder intermittently showed up on the series in the form of visions for various characters. These appearances allowed him to assist the rest of the cast in coping with his demise, accepting it, and finding forgiveness for their past errors or regrets.
For the larger part of the series, I was absent from the show, only to make a special appearance during the final episode. In the penultimate and finale episodes, viewers like myself were granted one last heartfelt moment with Boone, as he found peace alongside the other survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, ultimately moving on.
Despite the sadness surrounding Boone’s character demise in ‘Lost’, it’s challenging to feel too distraught about it in retrospect. This is because his departure from the show opened up the opportunity for him to eventually embody the beloved rogue and trickster Damon Salvatore in ‘The Vampire Diaries’.
