IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack director Anubhav Sinha on controversy around Vijay Varma starrer Netflix series; ‘Don’t want to play that game’

As an ardent fan of Anubhav Sinha’s cinematic prowess, I must say that his latest directorial web show, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, has truly lived up to my expectations. The series, based on Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhary’s book, Flight Into Fear, is a testament to Sinha’s ability to bring complex stories to life with an unparalleled authenticity.

Anubhav Sinha’s web series, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, remains a hot topic on social media. Although it received widespread acclaim, it faced criticism for misrepresenting the religious identities of the five hijackers. In response to these claims, the director stated that he prefers not to delve into that debate as they stayed faithful to their script.

In response to the uproar, the creators felt compelled to insert a disclaimer at the start of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, using the actual names of the culprits. Later on, director Anubhav Sinha shared his thoughts, explaining that the admiration and accolades he’s received seem to erase everything else. He went on to say that controversies are a different story altogether.

He shared with Hindustan Times that he’s not familiar with that particular game, and he doesn’t possess the skills for it. Instead, his expertise lies in creating films – a project he’s been diligently working on since June 2022. He emphasized that he’s maintained accuracy throughout the script development process.

After the premiere of the gripping series, numerous individuals who lived through a similar harrowing event shared their stories and praised its authenticity. As for myself, while I don’t spend a great deal of time online, I am cognizant of the conversations that have been sparked.

Speaking about Mulk, Sinha remarked, “The public stood by me just as they did then when problems arose. Similarly, I’ve maintained my pure-minded approach in projects like Thappad, Anek, and Bheed.” He also mentioned that the recent work is being praised as his best yet, with some calling it “Anubhav 3.0,” which refers to an evolution of his filmmaking journey.

The filmmaker is delighted and appreciative upon learning that viewers have been enjoying the series, as indicated by the viewership statistics he’s received from the streaming platform.

Initially, Anubhav Sinha had some reservations about the series airing on a smaller screen. Yet, his mood brightened when he learned that the show was making waves in an impressive 42 countries.
