IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack: PIL filed in Delhi HC demanding ban on Vijay Varma starrer Netflix series for THIS reason

As someone who has spent a significant part of my life engrossed in the world of cinema, I have to say that the ongoing controversy surrounding IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is both fascinating and concerning. Having witnessed the evolution of Indian cinema from its humble beginnings to its current global prominence, I’ve come to appreciate the delicate balance between artistic freedom and respect for religious sentiments.

The film IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, featuring Vijay Varma, has been generating much attention recently. On Monday, a petition was lodged in the Delhi High Court following the summon of Netflix’s head. The petition aims to ban Anubhav Sinha’s direction due to accusations that it offends religious sentiments by manipulating historical facts.

The plea filed on Monday demanded a ban on Vijay Varma starrer OTT series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack on the grounds of distorting facts about the real identities of the real hijackers. It has been alleged in the plea that Anubhav Sinha’s directorial series wrongly shows the hijackers as having names like Bhola and Shankar, the other names of Lord Shiva, which hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community.

The petition has been filed by Hindu Sena president and farmer Surjit Singh Yadav. He has demanded the Center and the Maharashtra government to cancel the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and direct them to ban the series for its public viewing.

“The important details about the true identities of the hijackers being twisted has not only distorted history but also continues to spread damaging stereotypes and incorrect information. This court’s intervention is necessary to stop any further confusion among the public and potential harm.”

On Monday, representatives from the central government called in the head of Netflix India’s content department regarding a controversial series they produced. They have requested that he provide an explanation for scenes perceived as confrontational, which depict the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane by the Pakistan-based terror group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

This series, developed by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Srivastava, derives its narrative from the events detailed in the book “Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story,” written by Devi Sharan, the flight’s captain, and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury.

In addition to Vijay, this series stars Naseeruddin Shah, Dia Mirza, Rajiv Thakur, Pooja Gor, Patralekhaa, Aditya Srivastava, Pankaj Kapur, and others in significant roles. The series recounts the story of Indian Airlines Flight 814’s hijacking on December 24, 1999 – a historic event known as the longest hijack incident in aviation history.

The widely discussed Netflix series, debuting on August 29, 2024, has been garnering tremendous affection from cinema enthusiasts.
