As a survivor of the IC814 hijack ordeal, I eagerly await the arrival of Netflix’s limited series, IC814: The Kandahar Hijack. My heart races at the mere mention of this turbulent chapter in Indian history, and I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation as I watch the teaser.
Netflix India has revealed the long-awaited trailer for IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, an engaging drama-thriller that recounts the notorious hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane carrying around 188 passengers in late 1999. This limited series is scheduled to debut on Netflix on August 29, 2024.
Under the guidance of Anubhav Sinha, this series delves into different facets of a hijacking incident and the ensuing negotiations. The talented ensemble includes Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Verma, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, and Patralekha, with many more distinguished actors as well.
The narrative centers around the occurrences that took place within and beyond the aircraft. On a fateful day, Indian Airlines flight IC 814 experienced a hijacking just minutes after departing from Kathmandu, making it the longest airline hijack in Indian history. This Boeing, carrying approximately 188 passengers, was held captive for a span of seven days. It first flew from Kathmandu to Amritsar and then to Lahore for refueling. Later, it journeyed towards Dubai before eventually landing at Kandahar, controlled by the Taliban. On December 31, 2000, all passengers were safely released.
As an ardent follower of global events, I can’t help but delve into the intriguing tale of the past. Among the three hostage-exchange prisoners was none other than Masood Azhar, the head honcho of Jaish-e-Mohammad. The then Foreign Minister, Jaswant Singh, embarked on a journey to Kandahar, escorting these terrorists, who were eventually handed over to the Afghan Taliban. Quite a thrilling turn of events!

Previously, at a Netflix gathering, director Sinha elaborated on the series, painting a picture of the plane being high up in the sky, under the command of potentially threatening individuals whose requests were unclear. It was uncertain whether their demands could be accommodated for the passengers’ wellbeing or how far people on the ground might go to negotiate a secure outcome.
Sinha emphasized the difficulties encountered not only within the plane but also across international borders, as it touched down in four distinct nations during one sleepless night.
As a seasoned aviation professional with decades of experience under my belt, I found “IC814: The Kandahar Hijack” to be an exceptionally well-crafted portrayal of the harrowing events that transpired during the 1999 hijacking. Having worked in the industry for so long, I can attest to the accuracy with which the series captures the tense atmosphere within the aircraft, the frantic activity at the War Room in Delhi, and the delicate negotiations taking place in Kandahar.
