Ice Age 6 Is Happening, Star John Leguizamo Reveals

As a devoted cinephile with over two decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that the return of the Ice Age franchise is like a warm, fuzzy blanket on a cold winter’s night. John Leguizamo‘s tease about the upcoming sixth installment has sent ripples of excitement through the community of fans who have grown up with these prehistoric pals.

Comedian and actor, John Leguizamo, shared during an interview on NPR’s ‘Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me’, that the production of Ice Age 6 has begun. The first Ice Age film was released back in 2002, and Leguizamo provided the voice for Sid, a lovable but not-so-bright sloth who became well-loved by fans. In a recent teaser, he hinted that another Ice Age movie is underway, using his character’s voice to share this exciting news.

(Impersonating Sid the sloth) We’re about to do “Ice Age” six – six.

Renowned for his voice acting and stand-up comedy, Leguizamo boasts a wide range of roles to his credit. Ranging from “The Menu” to “The Green Veil”, his performances have earned him accolades. Moreover, he graced the screen as the enigmatic all-seeing Uncle Bruno from the Madrigal Family in Disney’s “Encanto”. Leguizamo’s one-man shows are particularly noteworthy, featuring him portraying multiple characters within a single act. When questioned about his approach to creating the voice for Sid the Sloth, Leguizamo shared:

“I got Discovery Channel footage, and I saw that sloths stored food in their cheek pouches, and they – it would ferment and they’d get drunk. And so I started eating a sandwich. And I put it in my cheek pouches, and I walked around the house waiting for it to ferment, and it didn’t. But what happened was then I got slushy – slushy in my mouth. And I called the director – (impersonating Sid the sloth) Chris, guess who this is? And he was like, I have no idea. (Impersonating Sid the sloth) Sid the sloth. I found myself.”

The Ice Age series includes movies, TV shows, video games, and special shorts. The latest movie that hit theaters was “Ice Age: Collision Course,” released in 2016. With a global box office revenue of $6 billion, Ice Age is among the most financially successful animated film franchises. Originally created by Blue Sky Studios, the franchise became part of Disney’s portfolio after its parent company, 20th Century Fox, was acquired.

Disney Plus has carried on with the Ice Age saga, debuting a spin-off movie titled “The New Adventures of Buck Wild” and an original series “Ice Age: Scrat’s Chronicles“. The fresh spin-offs were developed by Bardel Entertainment, mirroring the shift in management. “The New Adventures of Buck Wild” also featured a new ensemble cast, with Jake Green stepping into the role of Sid, Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes as Manny, Skyler Stone as Diego, and Dominique Jenkins as Ellie, hinting at a new chapter for the franchise. Nevertheless, Disney’s plans for the series’ future are uncertain, as “The New Adventures of Buck Wild” received moderate viewership and garnered a mediocre 32% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t the lowest in the series, but certainly not promising.

As a diehard film enthusiast, I’m eagerly awaiting the plot details for “Ice Age 6.” However, John Leguizamo’s recent comments hint that our beloved original actors might rejoin the adventure. That means Ray Romano could return as Manny the mammoth, Denis Leary might roar back as the sarcastic saber-toothed tiger Diego, and Queen Latifah could grace us again with her charming portrayal of Ellie. The franchise has always pushed the boundaries with its outlandish storylines, from Earth-shattering catastrophes to alien encounters, so I can’t wait to see what they cook up for the next chapter!
