The comeback of Craig’s weekly antics has been confirmed! Ice Cube and New Line Cinema have sealed a deal to produce another Friday film for fans. Nearly two decades after the release of Friday After Next, the fourth installment, Last Friday, is officially in development. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, New Line’s President and COO, Richard Brener, disclosed that Ice Cube has closed the deal to star and write the movie. This news has been eagerly anticipated since 2002, as fans have longed for their beloved characters to embark on one final misadventure before the weekend begins.
For nearly two decades, not just fans but also Ice Cube himself have been pushing for a fourth movie installation. However, discussions on this project have repeatedly hit a dead end. At one point, due to the scarcity of updates about a new Friday film, people got so impatient that they made their own versions and shared them on social media, even creating fake posters to mislead others into thinking the wait was over. Now, it seems like their dreams have come true as people look back at the 1995 movie that sparked it all. But the question remains, will other key characters from the original film reappear in this new installment?
On April 26, 1995, the movie titled “Friday” made its theater debut and went on to be one of the most iconic Black buddy comedy films from the ’90s. The story revolves around Craig, who has just lost his job, and his friend Smokey (Chris Tucker), who prefers a life of minimal effort and questionable companionship. For the most part, they spend their time lounging on Craig’s porch conversing until Big Worm (Faizon Love), a drug dealer, tells Smokey that he must pay back the money he owes or face consequences for both himself and Craig. As the duo brainstorm ways to get the necessary funds, they encounter a neighborhood thug, Deebo (Tiny “Zeus” Lester).
On a budget of $3.5 million, this film generated over $27 million at the box office and has amassed a significant fanbase since then. It can be found on cable networks as well as free streaming platforms like Tubi. This movie is frequently cited in Black culture, and it even finds its way into songs such as Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Additionally, Washington Commanders wide receiver Deebo Samuel bears a nickname inspired by Lester’s character.
‘Last Friday’ Will Be Without Some Fan-Favorite Characters
In the second and third films of the series, several original characters didn’t make a comeback. Various theories have circulated about this, but mainly, the franchise chose a new path, focusing on Craig living with his uncle and cousin, Willie Jones (John Witherspoon) and Betty Jones (Anna Maria Horsford)’s absence being explained by their sending him to live with Day Day (Mike Epps) in Rancho Cucamonga to shield him from trouble.
Nevertheless, the audience has longed for the fourth movie to serve as a complete story arc, featuring the original cast from the first film: Ice Cube, Chris Tucker (with DC Young Fly portraying his son), John Witherspoon, Anna Maria Horsford, Tiny “Zeus” Lester, Nia Long (as Craig’s crush Debbie), Regina King (Dana, Craig’s sister) and Anthony Johnson (Ezal). Unfortunately, Witherspoon, Lester, and Johnson are no longer with us and won’t appear in the film. Fingers crossed that the remaining cast members might reprise their roles, offering a memorable send-off to these cherished characters.
