A significant piece of Japanese motorsport heritage has now been relocated. The 1987 Nissan Skyline “Type HR31” GTS-R NISMO Group A, famously adorned with the renowned Calsonic livery for the first time, was recently purchased at Bonhams Cars’ The Scottsdale Auction. Chassis number HR31-128388 is reported to be the lone surviving NISMO Calsonic GTS-R, making it a truly exceptional addition to any collector’s portfolio.
The GTS-R race car, built by Kazuyoshi Hoshino’s Impul/NISMO team, participated in the Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTCC) during 1988 and 1989. Drivers such as Moto Kitano, Takao Wada, and Hoshino himself piloted this vehicle to significant successes, including a win at Nishi-Sendai Hi-Land Raceway and numerous pole positions in the 1989 season. Furthermore, this chassis was the first to don the iconic blue-and-white Calsonic racing livery, which would later become synonymous with the R32 GT-R, affectionately known as “Godzilla.
For three decades, this car was preserved in a personal collection. In 2024, an extensive restoration process was finished. Notable improvements included a NISMO engineer rebuilding the RB20DET-R engine from scratch, restoring the magnesium intake manifold, and carefully recreating its original Calsonic livery to match the era. Furthermore, the gearbox, brake hydraulics, and air jacks were inspected, refreshed, and upgraded to ensure the car was ready for track use once more.
This stunningly refurbished GTS-R, marking a notable achievement in Nissan’s racing legacy, was bought for an impressive $201,600 USD.
