As a devoted fan who grew up watching Devon Sawa‘s iconic performances in films like “Idle Hands” and “Final Destination,” it’s heartening to see the new generation of actors carrying on the legacy. Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, with their upcoming take on “Idle Hands,” are poised to bring a fresh spin to an already beloved classic.
Devon Sawa is ready to pass the torch after starring in the teen horror-comedy movie Idle Hands.
On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter verified that Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have been enlisted to pen a modern adaptation of the movie for Sony Pictures. Jason Reitman is overseeing production, with Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd from Team Todd also involved. At this point, no director has been named yet.
In the year 1999, the main actor from the original production expressed his well-wishes via social media. He stated, “If someone should take on the role, I hope it’s those two talented individuals.” He ended with, “Best of luck to both of you.
Afterward, Sawa, recognized for movies like “Final Destination” and the “Chucky” series, expressed that his young son was thrilled because Stranger Things star, Wolfhard, was joining the upcoming venture.
My 10 year old “Awesome!! Finn Wolfhard from the coolest show Staranger Things is making a new movie called idle hands!!”

Sawa shared that his son exclaimed, “Terrific! Finn Wolfhard from the fantastic series ‘Stranger Things’ is set to appear in a new film titled ‘Idle Hands’!”. When he clarified that it was him who would be starring in the original, his kid responded, “Well, okay dad. Whatever you say — can I have a snack now?
Moreover, when someone on social media stated that an “Idle Hands” update was unnecessary, Sawa responded with, “It’ll be entertaining! I’m eager.
Back in April of ’99, Sony dropped “Idle Hands” on us gamers, a little over a decade after the tragic events at Columbine High School. It only managed to rake in around $4 million at the box office initially, but this flick has since become a favorite among us cult movie enthusiasts.
In the initial film, Rodman Flender was the one in charge, featuring actors like Seth Green, Elden Henson, Jessica Alba, and Vivica A. Fox. The movie titled “Idle Hands” presents Sawa’s character as a teenage pothead named Anton, whose hand, now under possession, becomes determined to carry out a deadly rampage.
In collaboration, Wolfhard and Bryk have both written the script and will direct the upcoming horror-comedy movie titled “Hell of a Summer,” which is produced by Neon.
This news follows Sony rebooting the horror franchise that began with the 1997 teen slasher movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. The new entry is set to hit theaters July 15, 2025.
