In Season 1, we got to know Peter as he delved into the realm of moles, conspiracies, and high-octane action. Conversely, Season 2 of The Night Agent revolves around Peter grappling with the ethical dilemmas he encounters in his new position. It appears that creator Shawn Ryan intentionally keeps our hero Peter Sutherland from causing excessive chaos among the villains, a choice not always supported by series lead Gabriel Basso wholeheartedly.
In a recent chat about the newest episodes on Netflix (without giving any spoilers), Basso discussed the challenge of portraying the choices made by Peter, which he must discuss with Ryan. This individual is known for creating successful series like “The Shield” and “S.W.A.T.” According to Basso, they are carefully navigating a tightrope to depict Peter as both an effective action figure and a moral authority, as revealed in his conversation with THR.
For the first time, it’s crossing my mind now. (Chuckles) That’s Shawn Ryan’s [call in the writing], and then my task is to portray that internal conflict, the desperation, and the violence. However, he could have been even more violent. I mean, they had to hold me back a bit on the fight front when I was saying, “Why don’t I just kill him? He’s tried to kill me three times, and I’m knocking him out? [I should] shoot him a few times.” And they responded, “No, no, no. Peter is a hero.” So, perhaps my tendency to go overboard, especially with bad characters, was starting to surface there.
The actor referred to it as a challenging habit rather than a bad one, and went on to elaborate about the difficulties of restraining himself when portraying Peter. Basso frequently performs his own stunts in the series, and finds the character to be exceptionally capable.
His physical abilities are strong, yet it’s not just that which drives him. The true motivation comes from within, the inner conviction about what he is doing. I considered portraying Peter as showing signs of desperation and hesitation, especially when thrust into a battle for his survival. However, he also acknowledges that he is consciously choosing to engage in these situations, accepting the risks they present.
Interestingly, the role of being a hero often places Peter in harm’s way, and creator Stephen Baldwin hints that at some point, The Night Agent might not be referring to his character anymore, suggesting that Peter Sutherland could meet his end. While I won’t disclose significant details about Season 2, it’s been confirmed that The Night Agent will return for a third season, with Baldwin set to reprise his role then.
In the interview, Basso mentioned his desire to avoid appearing as a flawless superhero, with perfectly styled hair and untouched stage makeup. He also emphasized his efforts to maintain authenticity and roughness, often focusing on portraying Peter with injuries, stating that he’s consistently working towards depicting situations where Peter isn’t at his best or fully healed.
The character might undergo some back-and-forth discussions, but it was worth it because The Night Agent Season 2 debuted at the top of Netflix’s prestigious #1 slot in their Top 10 list upon release. If you want to watch the newest episodes, they were released on January 23 and are now available for viewing with a Netflix subscription.
