As a seasoned gamer with decades of wrestling fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that the release of Mr. McMahon has sent shockwaves through the wrestling community, much like a well-timed Rock Bottom. This riveting six-part series delves deep into the life and times of Vince McMahon, pulling no punches as it recounts some of wrestling’s most iconic moments over the past 40 years.
Following several months of anticipation and rumors, the six-part documentary series titled “Mr. McMahon” – focusing on the contentious figure Vince McMahon – has been added to Netflix’s 2024 lineup. This gripping portrayal offers a candid look into McMahon’s life, career milestones, and the numerous controversies he faced during his tenure as WWE Chairman. The series pulls no punches in recounting some of wrestling’s most memorable moments from the past four decades, both positively and negatively.
Below you’ll find several wrestling documentaries that could serve as excellent supplements to Mr. McMahon. Each one addresses similar themes, provides additional context for major events in the documentary McMahon dislikes, or both. Let’s explore them together!
Beyond The Mat (1999)
Barry W. Blaustein’s film “Beyond the Mat” is widely considered one of the greatest wrestling movies ever produced, and also one of the most contentious. Shot during the boom period of professional wrestling in the late ’90s, this revealing documentary offers an unflinching look at various promotions, including the then-WWF, as they strive to elevate the sport to unprecedented levels, regardless of the costs involved.
If you were into Mr. McMahon and it pulled back the curtain on professional wrestling, then this 1999 documentary is a must-watch.

Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows (1998)
1998 saw the debut of “Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows,” a film that chronicles the last phases of Bret Hart’s 14-year tenure in the WWE, culminating in the notorious “Montreal Screwjob” at Survivor Series ’97. As I watched episodes featuring Vince McMahon, particularly the one about the “Screwjob,” I found myself constantly drawn back to this iconic documentary, possibly because a great deal of footage from it was utilized in the recently released Netflix series.

Dark Side Of The Ring (2019 – Present)
Similar to Mr. McMahon, the acclaimed series “Dark Side of the Ring” by Vice doesn’t limit its focus to a single significant tale from wrestling history, but delves into numerous controversies, incidents, and polarizing figures. Since 2019, this engaging true crime series, now in its fifth season, has meticulously documented events ranging from fallen wrestlers like Owen Hart and the Von Erich family, to the infamous “Plane Ride from Hell”, Vince McMahon’s steroid trial, and many more.

Who Killed WCW? (2024)
A contemporary wrestling documentary titled “Who Killed WCW?” is a four-part Vice production that delves into the ascendancy and demise of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), along with the impact Ted Turner’s wrestling promotion had on the entertainment landscape during the ’90s. Unlike certain WWE productions released amidst the “Monday Night Wars,” this one maintains a neutral stance in terms of biases, although there is plenty of accusatory gestures. However, isn’t that what makes wrestling documentaries, particularly those revolving around defunct promotions, so intriguing?
