Ilana Glazer Sets Hulu Stand-Up Special as Comedy Arms Race Heats Up

As a die-hard comedy enthusiast with a soft spot for trailblazing women in the stand-up scene, I can hardly contain my excitement for Ilana Glazer‘s upcoming special, “Human Magic” on Hulu! Having made a name for herself through the groundbreaking series “Broad City,” Glazer has proven time and again that she’s not just a comedic force to be reckoned with, but also a tireless performer who leaves no stone unturned in her quest for laughs.

Hulu’s stand-up push continues with Ilana Glazer.

Comedian Abbi Jacobson, famous for her role in “Broad City,” will release her second stand-up special titled “Human Magic” on the streaming platform on December 20th. Rotten Science and Starrpix are producing this hour-long show, with Jeff Tomsic scheduled to direct. The taping took place in early May in Toronto, and it is set to air globally on Disney+.

A month after Jim Gaffigan’s November special, it’s my turn to laugh as Hulu kicks off their monthly stand-up series they’ve dubbed “Hularious”. They’ve got some big names lined up too, like Bill Burr, Roy Wood Jr. from The Daily Show, and potentially Sebastian Maniscalco, Atsuko Okatsuka, and Jessica Kirson. As part of this new initiative, Hulu will also roll out a collection of licensed specials, a blend of classic hours and recent releases.

As a gamer navigating the vast landscape of streaming comedy, I’ve come to adopt a philosophy: quality over quantity. Unlike some platforms that flood their lineup with weekly releases, Hulu takes a more selective approach, launching just 12 comedies annually. This strategy is designed to set our comedy brand apart from the likes of Netflix, which, despite its impressive reputation and consistent output, often faces criticism for being overcrowded.

The announcement comes as several streaming platforms, including Amazon, have tried to muscle into a standup marketplace that has, in recent years, been dominated by Netflix. In fact, stand-up specials have quickly become a bright spot in an otherwise bleak entertainment landscape, with outlets like Hulu offering as much as eight-figure paydays. A slate of specials costs only a fraction of a premium scripted series, after all, and big comics tend to have loyal fanbases and are often willing to do the heavy lifting when it comes to promotion.

Following the success of her critically praised movie “Babes,” which she co-wrote and acted in earlier this spring, Glazer has moved on to a new venture. Simultaneously, she was engrossed in touring the nation, perfecting her stand-up act, “Human Magic,” everywhere she went. In total, she performed 52 shows across 48 different cities. Her debut special, “The Planet is Burning,” was released on Amazon Prime Video in early 2020.
