As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours exploring virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel a tinge of excitement mixed with a dash of apprehension about the upcoming Green Lantern series, “Lanterns.” Having grown up with the classic Green Lantern comics, I have always cherished the cosmic scope and intergalactic adventures that this property offers.
It’s well known that the 2011 Green Lantern film didn’t fare well either with critics or at the box office, and Ryan Reynolds hasn’t shied away from mentioning this fact. But soon, there’s a chance for this character to make amends in the live-action world, as one of the upcoming DC TV shows, Lanterns, will be part of the DC Universe continuity. To be honest, I’ve had some reservations about this Green Lantern for several reasons, with the main concern being how it will feel “grounded.” However, after hearing updates from DC Studios co-head James Gunn about the DCU series, my curiosity has been piqued about what it might bring.
In my gaming world, during an engaging chat on “Happy Sad Confused,” I, as a fellow gamer and co-president of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, touched upon various topics such as the debut of “Creature Commandos” for Max subscribers, the reasoning behind Robert Pattinson’s Batman thriving in the Elseworlds realm. When Josh Horowitz asked about the level of realism in our upcoming Green Lantern series, I shared that… (explain what Gunn responded)
Well, I don’t want to give away all that stuff. I think grounded — just like, if Green Lanterns were real, what the fuck would they be and how would they be? I was thinking about it the other morning… the thing that keeps getting out is that it’s a terrestrial story. And I’m like, ‘Yeah, because it’s on Earth, the story takes place on Earth.’ Everybody is like, ‘We don’t want to see [Earth], they’re from outer space, they fly with rings. We don’t want to see it’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, they’re on Earth for the story, like most Green Lantern stories.’ It’s terrestrial-bound. It’s not in outer space. We don’t have a thousand Green Lanterns, all that stuff. It’s a grounded story that’s being told through another lens in a way that’s really… it’s an HBO series, and it’s going to be an HBO series. I’m happy with that and I love the scripts.
If you’ve missed updates on the Lanterns series, it centers around characters Hal Jordan (portrayed by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), who are investigating a murder in the heartland of America. I’m excited about these casting choices, and I have faith that the rest of the cast, including Kelly McDonald from Boardwalk Empire and Garrett Dillahunt from Fear the Walking Dead, will deliver great performances. Ozark’s Chris Mundy is serving as showrunner, and Damon Lindelof and Tom King are also involved in writing and executive producing. In particular, Tom King seems enthusiastic about Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre joining the cast.
As a die-hard Green Lantern fan, I can’t help but feel a tad concerned about the direction of the upcoming movie, “Lanterns,” as James Gunn has outlined. The story seems to be confined to Earth, which is surprising given that Green Lantern is one of DC’s primary cosmic properties. The Green Lantern Corps, after all, is a diverse group of intergalactic protectors, hailing from various corners of the universe. It’s a bit odd to exclude these cosmic elements, restrict the action to just Earth, and potentially limit the number of Green Lanterns we’ll see, with only Hal and John as the potential main characters.
Typically, HBO delivers on original programming, especially when it comes to DC lore. So, it’s hard for me to imagine James Gunn approving a Green Lantern project that strays from the essence of the source material. This doesn’t mean all my doubts about the show are disappearing, but Gunn’s recent statement has piqued my curiosity about what kind of production is in the works. I hope that while this might not be the Green Lantern TV show I would have created, I’ll still find it enjoyable.
It’s anticipated that the series titled “Lanterns” will debut on HBO in 2026, coinciding with the release of the upcoming DC film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. Previously mentioned, the series “Creature Commandos” has already started airing, while the movie “Superman”, penned and directed by James Gunn, is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
