As a lifelong fan of the X-Men universe and a devoted viewer of all things Marvel Cinematic, I must confess that my feelings towards “Deadpool & Wolverine” are as complex as Professor X’s mind. On one hand, it was an exhilarating ride, filled with the signature wit and action we’ve come to expect from Deadpool and Wolverine. But on the other, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment.
Certainly! Alright, let me share my thoughts… I truly enjoyed Deadpool and Wolverine. In fact, I loved it quite a bit, but there were a few aspects that left me feeling uncomfortable.
For quite some time now, I’ve been an ardent admirer of Deadpool, dating back to my middle school days. Admittedly, it’s a bit unusual that I took such a liking to the character at that tender age, but nonetheless, Deadpool has been a constant presence in my life for quite some time. My affection for the character extended to the comics, video games, and naturally, the last two ‘Deadpool’ movies. When it was revealed that Deadpool would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that ‘Deadpool 3’ featuring Wolverine was on the horizon, I was ecstatic beyond belief.
Being a dedicated fan of Deadpool for years, with Wolverine not far behind, I had been eagerly anticipating the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine“. The movie hit theaters in 2024’s lineup, and I made sure to catch it on its opening weekend. Despite thoroughly enjoying the film, there were certainly aspects that gave me pause, and I feel compelled to discuss them.

The Dependence Of MCU Knowledge And Former X-Men Characters For Most References
Ah, so Deadpool’s entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, quite a significant event indeed! Yet, let’s not feel compelled to bring it up constantly in our conversation.
As a longtime comic book enthusiast and avid moviegoer, I must say that there is no character quite like Deadpool when it comes to breaking the fourth wall and incorporating humor into the storyline. With my years of immersion in the Marvel universe, I can confidently assert that Deadpool stands out as the undisputed “fourth-wall king.” His ability to engage with the audience, insert humorous remarks, and reference real-world events has always been a delightful and refreshing aspect of his character. While She-Hulk also exhibits this trait, Deadpool’s unique blend of wit, sarcasm, and self-awareness sets him apart as a one-of-a-kind character in the Marvel universe.
As a devoted fan myself, I must say that in past Deadpool movies, there were references to the MCU, and they weren’t hard to miss – shout-outs to the Avengers, notions of Thanos, and other Easter eggs that even casual Marvel enthusiasts would catch. But let me tell you, Deadpool teaming up with Wolverine took things to a whole new stratosphere!
I’m quite fond of Marvel, regularly catching up on all the series available on Disney+, and revisiting each Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie multiple times. It’s been a joy for me to witness the growth and transformation of characters over time. However, it’s important to note that not everyone shares my enthusiasm. Some viewers might have anticipated a Deadpool and Wolverine collaboration in this film, but having prior knowledge about the MCU is crucial to fully grasp the plot.
If you missed watching Loki, you might be left scratching your head about what exactly the TVA is, beyond the vague description given in the movie. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that there are numerous references to previous X-Men characters throughout the series.
I’ve known for a while that Chris Evans would play The Human Torch, but Gambit was completely unexpected for me – I didn’t even recognize the connection to Channing Tatum initially, or with some of the other supporting characters either. To be honest, there were X-Men movies I had forgotten about and needed to revisit after watching.
The film primarily relied on references, which sometimes worked effectively, yet at other moments, it fell short.
The Waste Of Previous Supporting Characters We Loved
One major issue I have about this movie is that I was expecting more screen time for the beloved characters from Deadpool and Wolverine, considering the hype around their casting. However, it turned out that we didn’t get to spend as much time with these characters as I had hoped, having grown fond of them over the past few films.
In the new movie, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Yukio), Colossus, and even Dopinder – who was quite the comedic highlight in the previous film due to his misfit status with Deadpool’s lifestyle – had less screen time compared to expectations. Interestingly, we saw more of Peter, which was enjoyable, although I didn’t anticipate such a significant role for him. It seemed as though other beloved supporting characters that we grew attached to were largely absent from the storyline.
But Vanessa…that’s the biggest thing here that I have a gripe to pick on.
Also, The Fact That Vanessa Was Barely A Part Of The Film
I have a strong affection for Vanessa. Among many charming characters in Marvel films, she stood out as feisty, having an excellent demeanor, and managing to keep pace with Wade Wilson – a feat that’s quite challenging most of the time. Initially, there was uncertainty about whether Vanessa would appear in the upcoming film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, but later it was made clear she would be included.
And you’re telling me she was barely used in this film?
Oh, please don’t insinuate that Wade undertook this task merely because she asked or for personal gain. It was more profound than that – he did it out of a deep-seated passion for what he was doing, seeking meaning in the use of his unique abilities.
Instead of giving me that, let’s rephrase it as: “No, I don’t want that. She played such crucial roles in the last two movies, and even though she was the main factor driving Wade’s actions in those films, including this one, she seemed more prominent.”
In this movie, I found it hard to accept that we barely caught a glimpse of Vanessa for a short while, unlike the other characters.
How Cassandra Nova Felt Like An Underused Villain
It’s fascinating to note that the roster of MCU villains spans widely across different films, ranging from unforgettable standouts such as Thanos and Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, to some who tend to fade into obscurity. However, Cassandra Nova is an exception as I found a great deal of promise in her character.
To be frank, introducing mutants into the MCU opens up a whole new array of potential antagonists that we didn’t have before, and Nova was one I was particularly excited about. Emma Corrin is an outstanding actor, and I’ve been captivated by their talent since The Crown (a truly engaging series you should definitely check out on Netflix). I was looking forward to seeing them in a villainous role, but Nova seemed to be underdeveloped.
As a gamer, I found Corrin’s performances absolutely captivating – the tension she brought to the table was palpable! What made it even more intriguing was that her character turned out to be Professor X’s sinister sister. There was so much potential for development there. Unfortunately, when it came to Nova, I felt like her demise occurred far too swiftly, and her storyline seemed to wrap up in the blink of an eye once the climax hit. I yearned for a more expansive exploration of her character arc.
Face It – It Was Less Raunchy Than Other Deadpool Films
Upon the announcement of the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, there arose speculation as to whether this film would receive an R rating, given its integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I’m thrilled that it delivered, and let me tell you, the graphic scenes were spot on! Frankly, I’d even go as far as saying that a few instances were almost over-the-top – take Chris Evans’ character for example, where his body was twisted inside out, reducing to a pulp by Nova.
To put it simply, while Deadpool 3 was rated R, as expected, it seemed less explicit or edgy compared to the earlier films, which is somewhat disappointing for fans who enjoy its raunchy humor. The language used was noticeably less colorful, even with Wolverine in the mix, and the overall tone felt a bit more restrained. However, let’s remember that it’s still a movie worth seeing for Deadpool fans.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that my taste in movies has evolved significantly. In the past, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable watching certain films with my parents due to their mature content. However, as I’ve matured, I find myself more open to a wider variety of films. Yet, there was something about this particular movie that still gave me pause. Perhaps it was because of my life experiences up until now or perhaps it was simply the way the story was presented, but either way, I believe I could watch this one with them.
Watching Deadpool and Wolverine together remains an entertaining experience. You’re well aware of the kind of chaos these characters bring, and leaving the cinema, you’ll be grinning from ear to ear, having enjoyed their wild journey and the thrilling adventure they embark on. Not to mention, there are numerous cameos featuring Deadpool and Wolverine that you won’t want to miss. Nevertheless, as a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice some areas where improvements could have been made.
Oh, no matter, there’s always another opportunity—and fortunately, Deadpool might join forces with the Avengers in the future! That alone keeps me eagerly anticipating it, even though my feelings about this particular movie weren’t exactly stellar.
