Millennials far and wide were sure to gasp with excitement upon hearing that the Wayans brothers were rebooting the Scary Movie franchise. And this is no joke, folks. It’s really happening, with a confirmed theatrical release date and all. Surely, such enticing news has led fans to ponder other details, such as: Who else from the beloved cast will be returning? In addition to leading-lady Anna Faris, there was also scene-stealer Regina Hall, playing Faris’ bestie in the wild and wacky horror-parody films. The celebrated actress has kept busy in a plethora of other films since those flicks were released, including Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming O’Dessa. Hall took time while promoting her new fantasy musical to weigh in on the Wayans brothers’ Scary Movie revival as well — and whether they’ll bring back Hall’s beloved Brenda character.
The Best Man and Love & Basketball.
MovieWeb also had a chance to catch up with Hall recently during her O’Dessa promotion rounds, where she provided additional thoughts about the highly anticipated Scary Movie reboot. “They’re writing something. I haven’t read it yet. I’m curious to read it,” she told us. “I would love to know what kind of job Brenda got, and see where her life is now.“
Channeling Grace Jones for O’Dessa
In the meantime, Hall continues to steal the show across her various big-screen releases in recent years — the latest being the maximalist delight that is O’Dessa. Her villainous character, Neon Dion (what a name, by the way), dons an outrageous getup that could have been a popular Halloween costume idea if Searchlight Pictures decided to release O’Dessa closer to October. Oh well. Hall is almost recognizable as the petrifying right-hand woman to monstrous overlord Plutonovich (played by The White Lotus Emmy-winner Murray Bartlett), who rules the post-apocalyptic society in which director Geremy Jasper’s story is set.
Watching Hall’s Neon strut the streets with a certain ferocity in her eyes might induce nightmares, and Hall opened up to MovieWeb about the inspirations behind her latest performance:
“I wanted her to have a different voice, so I did think of Eartha Kitt’s raspiness. Someone brought up — which I hadn’t seen — but they brought up Tina Turner… in Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome. And maybe the domineering portions of, like, Grace Jones — just ideas of just different, really strong, domineering or dominant females.”
From Searchlight Pictures, O’Dessa will begin streaming on Hulu March 20.
