I’m Getting Wiser

A few weeks back, the nominations for the 2025 Oscars were revealed, with several prominent Hollywood figures receiving recognition. Nevertheless, there were also movies and performers who did not make the cut, among them Pamela Anderson for “The Last Showgirl” and John Lithgow for “Conclave.” Additionally, Denzel Washington, who was widely anticipated to secure a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II,” was also overlooked. However, Washington has now expressed his thoughts on this snub, offering a thoughtful and rejuvenating perspective.

Several reviews for the film “Gladiator II” featured lavish compliments for a 70-year-old actor’s convincing performance as the ambitious Macrinus. I must admit that I was taken aback when I noticed his name missing from this year’s Academy Award nominations list. It appears that Denzel Washington was watching when the announcements were made by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. However, he shared with The New York Times that he didn’t really feel let down because…

I found myself seated there, saying with a smile, “Check out you! On the day you didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, you’re rehearsing ‘Othello’ on Broadway. That’s a joke, right?” Aww, I’m so disappointed. But let me tell you, I’ve been in this industry for quite some time now. I’m maturing, learning to speak less and listen more – and that’s fascinating!

Indeed, it’s quite evident that you’re speaking of a remarkable viewpoint regarding the subject at hand. Notably, it’s important to acknowledge that the individual in question, who hails from Philadelphia, boasts two Academy Awards – one for his exceptional role in Glory and another for Training Day. Moreover, he has been nominated a total of nine times for an Oscar. However, what appears to be implied by his remarks is that he’s more focused on his ongoing journey as a performer rather than the accolades, which suggests a humility and eagerness to learn that others could certainly emulate. A truly admirable mindset, indeed!

It’s delightful to learn that the veteran actor appears unbothered by the awards, focusing more on his craft. Nevertheless, he has garnered appreciation from various other entities for his performance in the Paul Mescal-led historical drama. Remarkably, Mr. Washington gained a Golden Globe nomination, making him the first Black actor to amass 11 nominations from the Golden Globes. Additionally, he received Best Supporting Actor nominations from the Astra Film Awards and the Dallas–Fort Worth Film Critics Association. Regrettably, he was overlooked yet again for a BAFTA nomination.

The Cool Awards Distinction Colman Domingo Now Shares With Denzel Washington

Regardless of any snubbed awards or losses, Denzel Washington’s outstanding performance in Gladiator II remains undiminished. In this movie, Washington portrays Macrinus, a character who leverages Lucius’ combat skills for personal gain and aspires to control Rome. As an accomplished stage actor, Washington masterfully brings both flair and complexity to his role, giving the scenery a good chew while also developing his character. The film boasts some thrilling deleted scenes, and enthusiasts will be intrigued to learn that there’s additional material featuring Washington.

It’s undeniably sweet to consider a New York native earning his tenth Oscar nomination. However, as a devoted fan, I acknowledge that such recognition isn’t essential for him. He’s already demonstrated his talent beyond doubt. What truly matters seems to be the work itself for him, which is yet another testament to why he stands among our greatest and intellectually profound actors.
