As a child of the ’90s and a die-hard fan of the Farrelly brothers’ comedies, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of seeing Mary, Ted, Harry, and Lloyd once again grace our screens. The original There’s Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber are two films that have left an indelible mark on my laughter-soaked memory, and revisiting those characters in their golden years would undoubtedly be a strange kind of joy.

It feels unusual yet delightful to imagine Harry and Lloyd navigating life’s complications in their sixties. However, before I could truly enjoy that scene, I’d love for Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller to reappear on the big screen as the lively Mary Jensen and awkward Ted Stroehmann once more.
Hopes For There’s Something About Mary Sequel
Moving past the hypothetical reversion to the less intelligent realm of “Dumb and Dumber,” Bobby Farrelly shifted focus to their 1998 blockbuster hit, “There’s Something About Mary.” This film grossed an impressive $370 million at the box office on a budget of just $23 million. Moreover, it charmed both critics and audiences with its amusingly crass humor.

As a die-hard fan who’s been yearning for more “There’s Something About Mary” magic, I’ve heard rumors about the lack of sequels being because the filmmaker siblings don’t care about the characters anymore. But let me set your mind at ease. Over the past 26 years, if either brother had come up with a compelling story that could bring everyone back together, we absolutely could have had a follow-up film. The truth is, crafting such a tale isn’t easy and it takes a lot of effort to gather the original cast.

Indeed, that’s quite a demanding task, although it might not be as challenging as it would have been just ten years ago. Since 2014, Cameron Diaz has taken a break from acting and has only recently re-entered Hollywood for upcoming projects such as the Jamie Foxx action comedy “Back in Action” and the animated sequel “Shrek 5”. Similarly, Ben Stiller is less active as an actor nowadays but more so as a director and producer. He still takes on acting roles from time to time, and will be doing so for another long-awaited ’90s comedy sequel, “Happy Gilmore 2”.
Regardless of whether we meet Ted and Mary again, with or without their unique hair care products, at least we can reminisce about the past and chuckle, feeling a bit embarrassed when adjusting our collars.
