As a seasoned gamer with a couple of decades under my belt and two grown sons who have long since flown the coop, I must admit that Fortnite was never really my cup of tea. The constant updates, the ever-changing landscapes, and the dance moves left me baffled and frustrated. But then, something magical happened – Marvel characters started popping up in the game!
Let me share something unexpected but truly accurate: I never thought I’d express this, yet it’s a fact – currently, Fortnite offers the most amazing Marvel game I’ve ever experienced in my life, and I believe it can only get better from now on.
Openly speaking: As a 50-year-old dad with two energetic boys aged 16 and 20, Fortnite has been a game we’ve tried our hands on together. However, I must admit that it didn’t take long before they outmaneuvered me – let’s say, I met my match! The building mechanics, the sniping techniques, and those fancy dances after eliminating opponents were simply beyond my grasp at the moment. Instead of enjoying the thrill, I found myself more frustrated than entertained. So, for now, Fortnite has taken a backseat in our family gaming sessions.
Previously, in February, The Walt Disney Company obtained a share in Epic Games, known for creating Fortnite. Throughout 2024, this partnership flourished, with an assortment of Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters becoming available as cosmetic options (or “skins”) within the game across different modes like Battle Royale or Lego. Yet, it was the latest Fortnite campaign that demonstrated the immense potential this union holds for both Epic Games and Disney – along with iconic brands such as Marvel, Pixar, Avatar, and Star Wars – in the future.
Finally understanding the lure of the game
In our family, we often joked about V-bucks, the in-game currency from Fortnite. I’d scold my teens for spending their earned money on this digital coin, thinking they were essentially burning real cash with nothing tangible to show for it. Regardless if their character looked like Default or The Weeknd, they were still playing the same game.
More recently, it’s become noticeable that Marvel character costumes have been quite common in the game’s store. Although the Marvel Series has been integrated into Fortnite for some time, my casual observation suggests that new Marvel characters and features were being added to the store almost every other day, intentionally. When films like Deadpool and Wolverine hit theaters this summer, playable skins for both characters became available for purchase. Consequently, I found myself playing more often. This led me to explore topics such as Battle Passes, Daily Quests, and Story Missions.
And I bought my first Marvel skin: Daredevil.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’ve finally grasped the magic of gaming – playing as characters I admire elevates the experience to another level. For me, it’s all about Daredevil! Missions take on a new meaning when I step into his shoes. Over time, I’ve expanded my roster with other Marvel heroes, determined not to splurge cash but earn V-bucks through missions instead. They say that’s how they hook you! I managed to snag Captain America and Magneto during campaigns. However, it wasn’t until Season 4, Chapter 5, that I truly understood the marketing genius in Fortnite – a realization that made me appreciate the game even more.
Absolute Doom
As a devoted Fortnite Battle Royale enthusiast, I’m thoroughly enjoying the latest story campaign that heavily features Doctor Doom. With each new Chapter comes exciting additions to the game map, such as Doom’s Castle and Doomstadt – where I engage in intense battles against the notorious Spider-Man villain, Mysterio. Additionally, I get to visit The Raft, a high-tech prison straight out of Marvel comics, and take down Emma Frost. It’s an incredible experience!
Without quite noticing, you’re essentially attending a spontaneous tutorial on characters who are anticipated to play significant roles in upcoming Marvel films and series. Do you have fond memories of X-Men ‘97? You can relive those moments by assuming their roles within the game. Are you eager for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) to debut as Captain America? He’s among the characters featured in the game too!
Following Jonathan Majors’ career misfortune, Marvel Studios found it necessary to alter their plans for the character Kang the Conqueror while preserving the focus of Phases 6 and beyond. Their innovative solution was to invite Robert Downey Jr. back into the fold, this time as Doctor Doom. During San Diego Comic Con last summer, Kevin Feige disclosed that Avengers 5 would transform from “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” to “Avengers: Doomsday”. Additionally, RDJ confirmed his role as the iconic villain.
By sheer luck, this ongoing season of Fortnite has been educating worldwide players on details about Doom, his history, abilities, vulnerabilities, and more. This can be seen as a masterful application of cross-brand collaboration, and it seems like just the start of something exciting.
From X-Men to Pixar and back to Star Wars
Fortnite serves as a platform for various promotional activities, from featuring Taylor Swift to incorporating Metallica as playable characters. It’s not surprising that industries like entertainment are attracted to Epic Games’ enormous user base and their open-world creation. The appearance of Absolute Doom in Fortnite led me to understand how these entities can collaborate effectively, enhancing the public’s comprehension and admiration for stories released by Walt Disney, either in theaters or on streaming platforms.
In the last seven days, The Incredibles became available in the Fortnite store. I’m guessing that as we approach the release of Toy Story 5, we might see a map area resembling Andy’s room or Al’s Toy Barn. And when The Mandalorian and Grogu ramp up their launch, don’t be surprised if these characters are playable, but if Fortnite introduces a mode where players can explore Star Wars locations, the excitement for that movie could skyrocket!
Indeed, there are tantalizing hints in the ongoing Absolute Doom storyline suggesting the emergence of The Fantastic Four and Galactus, which undeniably stirs excitement for Marvel’s forthcoming film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“. This movie is slated for release in 2025, with Galactus serving as the primary antagonist.
As a longtime Marvel enthusiast, witnessing the strategic alliance between Walt Disney and Epic Games in Fortnite’s current season has filled me with excitement. The innovative collaboration and early triumphs have ignited my imagination with possibilities for future collaborations that could further bolster both brands. This game, as a gamer, is beyond rewarding. Keep pushing the boundaries, Epic Games! I eagerly anticipate the next chapter in these captivating characters and tales.
