As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the vast expanse of Whovian lore, I must say that the recent cast announcements for “The War Between the Land and the Sea” have me more excited than a Dalek in a sonic screwdriver factory!
In the past month, it’s been officially confirmed that “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” a spinoff from “Doctor Who” focusing on the Sea Devils, is indeed underway. Notable actors from the original series such as Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw have joined the cast to portray new characters. Additionally, Jenna Redgrave and Alexander Devrient will reprise their roles as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim from UNIT. Recently, two more actors for “The War Between the Land and the Sea” have been unveiled, and I’m thrilled to see one of them is another favorite from UNIT that we’ve encountered on “Doctor Who.” The other casting choice, however, caught my attention due to its unexpected connection to Torchwood.
Ruth Madeley Is Reprising Shirley Anne Bingham From The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials
In his debut on television following Jodie Whittaker’s exit as the Thirteenth Doctor and influencing Dalek origins, David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor first appeared in “The Star Beast,” the initial special of Doctor Who‘s three 60th anniversary episodes. Quickly, he encountered Shirley Anne Bingham, a scientific advisor for UNIT. Later in the series, during “The Giggle” – the third and concluding special – the Fourteenth Doctor underwent a bi-generational transformation that led to Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor.
Although Ruth Madeley didn’t play the lead in the first season of “Doctor Who” like Redgrave and Devrient did, BBC revealed that she will feature in the series titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea“. A cast photo was released to mark the start of production with Madeley, along with the previously mentioned four actors and the character we’ll discuss later. Last year, I found Shirley an excellent addition to “Doctor Who”, so it’s great news that she will return to help defend Earth from alien and bizarre dangers again. However, I do hope there’s a time when she gets to act alongside the Fifteenth Doctor as well.
Colin McFarlane Is Reprising Austin Pierce From Torchwood: Children Of Earth
Longtime fans of “Doctor Who” will recall that John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness, initially introduced during the sole season of the Ninth Doctor, headlined his own spinoff titled “Torchwood.” The third series or season, named “Torchwood: Children of Earth,” depicted Jack and his associates facing off against extraterrestrials who demanded 10% of Earth’s children. This storyline also delved into a government conspiracy involving these aliens. One of the characters in this narrative was Lieutenant General Austin Pierce, portrayed by Colin McFarlane, who assumed command of the operation within the U.S. Army.
15 years following the finale of “Torchwood: Children of Earth,” McFarlane will once again portray Pierce as a leading character in “The War Between the Land and the Sea“. It remains uncertain whether Pierce will now be employed by UNIT or if he’ll be enlisted to assist them when the Sea Devils start creating problems. Given that Pierce played an antagonistic role in “Children of Earth,” there is some concern that his involvement might make it more challenging for UNIT to handle this global crisis effectively.
I’m eagerly anticipating “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” but unfortunately, there’s no set release date as of now. Similar to watching “Doctor Who” these days, you’ll need a Disney+ subscription if you reside outside the United Kingdom.
