As a seasoned gamer and avid binge-watcher of television shows, I must say that Chloe Bennet’s return to our screens in Interior Chinatown is a sight for sore eyes. The series, with its clever social commentary, hilarious moments, and action sequences, has quickly become one of my favorite shows on Hulu.
This week, I’ve got my gaming controller in hand and eyes glued to the screen as Chloe Bennet is back with an exhilarating new streaming series: Interior Chinatown. The show delivers a witty social critique on media stereotypes alongside side-splitting comedy from Jimmy O. Yang and Ronny Chieng, but it’s the pulse-pounding action sequences that really make it worth your Hulu subscription. As Bennet shared with TopMob, having had my share of adventures on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, I was ready to hang up my superhero cape – but this series was just too good to pass up!
Bennett is renowned for her dedication in playing Daisy Johnson/Quake on ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, a role that required her to learn various martial arts like kickboxing, boxing, krav maga, and jiujutsu. After seven seasons, the series concluded in 2020 with a remarkable finale. Throughout her acting career, Bennett has suffered numerous injuries. When I inquired about her involvement in stunts for “Interior Chinatown”, this was her response:
I must admit, I was quite relieved not to participate, truth be told. I’m still sore from binge-watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and my body aches. I may be getting old, but it was satisfying to watch the action unfold without having to join in myself. I’m feeling quite uncomfortable right now.
Although I wouldn’t categorize 32 as old and worn out, it’s fair to say she’s earned the right to sit on the bench after spending seven years leading the Marvel series. During filming of the second season, Bennet, who was 23 at the time, once shared with IGN that she broke her arm while rehearsing a fight scene but chose to continue so her stunt double wouldn’t have to do as much. This dedication is truly an admirable accomplishment. Interestingly, Bennet has boasted about performing many of the stunts on the ABC show herself, but for this series where she portrays detective Lana Lee, there was no need for fighting, and she was perfectly content with that.
In the show “Interior Chinatown,” its leading actor, Jimmy O. Yang, spoke highly of his co-stars to TopMob, praising them for performing their own stunts during the action scenes.
For three months prior to that, I dedicated myself thoroughly to intense training. I practiced martial arts techniques on a wooden dummy and learned the language, both of which were my own accomplishments. The fight was mine as well; it was my first time participating in such an event. It was incredibly satisfying. Our choreography incorporated various martial arts styles, but even within that initial fight scene, there’s a narrative, don’t you think? You almost anticipate the main character of the show, our hero, to win this fight, but he doesn’t because he’s just an unassuming figure in Chinatown. The supporting character doesn’t win the fight, if you catch my drift? So, within that fight, we managed to tell a compelling story through its physicality. I found that quite innovative.
In the newest television series based on a novel, actor Yang assumes the role of Willis Wu, a restaurant worker at a Chinese eatery that serves as a backdrop for the police drama titled “Black & White“. It isn’t long before Wu discovers that he is merely a secondary character in someone else’s tale. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he witnesses a woman being abducted. His coworker and friend, Fatty Choi, portrayed by Ronny Chieng, plays an active role in the action sequences alongside Yang. As he shared with us:
As a gamer, I was thrilled to have been included in the action-packed adventure we embarked on together. It was an absolute blast! For what seemed like an eternity (or at least a week), we battled fiercely inside that restaurant. We were tossing plates and dishes left and right, honing our skills, perfecting moves that ultimately didn’t make the final cut. I ended up with quite a collection of bruises from elements they decided not to utilize. Even the epic moment when Jimmy and I broke through a wall only to have it discarded in the end!
In response to Chieng’s remarks, Chloe Bennet noted that “many” stunts are usually removed from films. With her extensive experience, she doesn’t need physical interaction to make a scene hers, allowing Yang and Chieng to excel in their stunt performances. The show Interior Chinatown is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
